MARQUETTE, Mich. - Dana Stephens scored the game-winning goal in
overtime to lead Northern Michigan to a 2-1 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer win over Michigan Tech
Saturday (Oct. 30). The overtime game was the first for the
Huskies.
"We played good soccer today," said head coach Michelle
Jacob. "We connected more passes and created more scoring
chances in the second half but gave up the game-winner in
overtime."
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Jessica
Lusardi in the 11th minute.
Eva
Vrana answered for the Huskies with her first career goal in
the 70th minute. Lindsey
Van Rooy sent a pass from the right side of the penalty box to
Vrana on the left side for the goal.
Stephens capitalized on a miscue by Tech goalie MaryBeth
Spoehr for the overtime goal. Spoehr finished with 11 saves for
the Huskies.
Northern (8-4-5, 8-4-3) finished with advantages in both shots
(21-16) and corner kicks (7-2).
Today's game was the final for the Huskies who finish their
inaugural season with a 7-10-0 overall record and a 5-10-0 mark in
league play.
"I am really proud of what we accomplished in our first season,"
said Jacob. "I think we exceeded people's expectations, including
our own."
