HOUGHTON, Mich. The Michigan Tech women's tennis team
eked out a 5-4 victory over Lake Superior State today in its first
match since last October. The Huskies won four of five singles
points to move their record to 8-5 overall.
LSSU (5-10) won two of three doubles matches including a 9-8 (4)
score at No. 2.
Michigan Tech came back by winning four of the six singles points
all by very close scores. Silvia Oliveros defeated Ingrid
Pflieger 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 1, and Nathalia
Rondelli beat Weronika Lomacka 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) at No. 2.
The Lakers won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 6 to take a 4-3 lead
in team scoring.
Tech's Asel Otunchieva won 3-6, 6-1, 2-1 at No. 4 after
her opponent retired. Danielle Stoll finished off the team win
with a three-set marathon at No. 5. She claimed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
victory.
"We played a very solid first match of the spring," said head coach
Mike Axford. "Everybody played up, and we did a
good job of fighting for points."
Michigan Tech will continue its spring season tomorrow against
Minnesota Duluth at 9 a.m.
