BIG RAPIDS, Mich. Michigan Tech outscored Ferris State by
15 in the second half to come away with a 66-58 victory at Wink
Arena tonight. The Huskies placed four players in double figures as
it won its third straight game to improve to 12-10 overall and 9-8
in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Ferris State (11-11, 9-8 GLIAC) scored five points in the final
eight seconds of the first half to turn a tightly contested frame
into a 34-27 lead at the break. Tech turned the ball over nine
times in the half and made just 3-of-7 free throws.
Michigan Tech opened the second half on a 12-4 run capped by five
points from Robby Springborn including a steal and lay-in.
The lead changed hands several times through the second half
including at the 5:54 mark when the Bulldogs made back-to-back
3-pointers for a 54-52 advantage.
The Huskies did not allow another point for the next four minutes.
Georgio Holt's tip-dunk at the 2:28 mark proved
to be a pivotal play during an 8-0 run that saw the visitors build
up a 60-54 advantage with 1:09 to play. Tech made 4-of-6 free
throws in the final minute and Fedrick
Bowe pulled down a big offensive rebound to ice the
victory.
Second half totals for the Black and Gold were five turnovers and
18-of-23 free throws.
"We played Tech basketball in the second half," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "We took care of the ball, made our free throws and
played good defense.
"To have four guys in double figures was really nice to see.
Everybody stepped up and made the plays when we needed."
Springborn paced the Huskies with 15 points, which moved him within
six of 1,000 career points. Bowe tallied his second straight
double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Mike
Hojnacki tallied 14 points on 4-of-5 3-point shooting and a
pair of free throws. Holt registered 10 points and six
rebounds.
Tech finished the game at 43 percent from the field and held the
hosts to 36 percent. The Huskies also outrebounded the Bulldogs
36-31.
Michigan Tech will look to sweep its four-game road swing with a
contest at Grand Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 14). Tipoff at the
GVSU Fieldhouse is set for 3 p.m.
