HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech lost by a 6-3 score in each
of its matches over the weekend at the Gates Tennis Center. The
Huskies were defeated by Ferris State Saturday (Sept. 27) and Grand
Valley State Sunday (Sept. 28). The matches represented the first
home matches for Tech in 2008-09.
Michigan Tech freshman Victoria Zhilkina went 4-0 in her matches
over the weekend. The St. Petersburg, Russia, native swept both of
her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets including a 6-0, 6-0
score vs. GVSU's Audrey Koopsen.
At No. 2 doubles, Zhilkina and partner Asel
Otunchieva won by 8-1 and 8-4 scores.
Tech's No. 1 doubles duo of Silvia Oliveros and Nathalia
Rondelli posted their best match of the season in Sunday's, 8-6
triumph over the Lakers' top doubles team.
Oliveros was the only Tech player besides Zhilkina to post a
singles win. She defeated Ferris' Melissa Flowers, 6-1, 6-1.
"We've got to step up our play especially in singles," said
Huskies' head coach Mike Axford. "Victoria had a strong weekend
despite battling an injury, and I felt that we played our best
doubles of the season by far vs. Grand Valley."
Michigan Tech, which is 1-3 overall and 1-3 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will remain at home for two
more conference matches next weekend. The Huskies host Findlay
