OMAHA, Neb. - The Michigan Tech women's volleyball team finished
day one of action today at the Comfort Inn & Suites/Firewater
Grille Tournament hosted by Neb. Omaha undefeated after beating the
University of Mary 3-0 and Northwest Missouri State 3-1.
In the day's opening match, Tech relied on a strong offense and
solid blocking to defeat Mary in the first match in three sets
(25-14, 25-16, 25-11). The Huskies out-hit the Crusaders .280 to
-.036 in the match. Tech also finished with a 8.0 to 2.0 advantage
in total team blocks.
Senior Veronica Armstrong led all players with 12 kills
on 22 attacks with only two errors to finish with a .500 attack
percentage. She was also responsible for three of the team's nine
service aces in the match.
Senior Kelsey Skoog handled the majority of the setting
duties, finishing with 27 of the team's 29.
"This was a good match for us to open the season with," said head
coach Krista Mikesch. "It was a great starting point
and we were able to see what people were able to do."
Overall 12 different Tech players saw playing time in the
match.
The Huskies continued their strong defensive play at the net to
down the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State 3-1 (25-20, 22-25,
25-22, 25-22). Tech finished the match with a 13.0 to 5.0 advantage
in blocks.
Senior Jen Jung tallied one block solo and added five
block assists to led the Huskies. She also finished with a .615
attack percentage and a match-high 18 kills.
Michigan Tech had three other players finish with 10 or more kills
in the match. Senior Christa Jung collected 15 kills, senior Ashley
Nyenhuis had 11 and junior Kelly Jorgenson added 10.
Armstrong continued her dominance at the serving line recording
four more aces against NWMSU to finish the day with seven.
"Northwest Missouri challenged us more. The girls played with
character and didn't give," said Mikesch about the match which
featured 10 lead changes and 29 tied scores. "If we keep playing
like this we will have a great season."
Tech will wrap up play at the Comfort Inn & Suites/Firewater
Grille Tournament tomorrow (Aug. 30) against Minn. State Moorhead
and No. 11 Emporia State.
