Box Score
DETROIT Michigan Tech lost a tight men's basketball game
at Wayne State 62-55 tonight as both teams began their Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedules. The Huskies (3-3,
0-1 GLIAC) led at halftime but were outscored 40-32 in final 20
minutes.
The first half was a close affair the entire way, with neither team
leading by more than four. Back-to-back assists from Matt Gaedke in
the final minute helped the Huskies take a 23-22 lead into
halftime.
Wayne State went on an 11-3 run through the first 10 minutes of the
second half for a 33-26 score. The margin grew to as many as seven
before Gaedke's four-point play at the 4:30 mark closed the gap to
41-38.
Tech got the defensive stop on the other end but couldn't trim the
deficit any more. WSU scored the next six to push the gap back to
nine. The Huskies began pressing and fouling to extend the game and
closed to within 56-51 with 30 second to play. The Warriors iced
the game at the free throw line.
Springborn finished with a game-high 20 points. Chris Baugh added
10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Fedrick Bowe notched nine
points and eight rebounds.
WSU post player Shane Lawal posted a triple-double with 19 points,
11 rebounds and 10 blocks. He was a major factor in the Huskies'
shooting 31 percent from the field.
Wayne State shot 38 percent from the floor and converted 25-of-42
free throws.
"We had an inability to score at critical times tonight and made
some bad turnovers," said head coach Kevin Luke. "I thought our
defense was good enough to win. We just need to be better on the
offensive end."
Michigan Tech will return to action Saturday (Dec. 6) at Northwood.
Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
