HOUGHTON, Mich. Minnesota Duluth made 51 percent of its
field goals including 8-of-16 3-pointers to defeat Michigan Tech
66-54 today at the SDC Gym. The visiting Bulldogs (3-2) outscored
the Huskies (2-2) by six in both halves.
The first frame was a see-saw affair until the final five minutes
when the Bulldogs went on an 11-1 run to claim a 31-26 edge at the
half.
The second stanza opened with back-to-back baskets by Chris
Baugh to trim the Huskies' deficit to two. UMD answered with
the next six points to retain the lead. The margin hovered between
five and 10 all the way until the 6:13 mark.
Brandon Ball stole the basketball and was
intentionally fouled. He made both free throws to cut the gap to
49-44. The Huskies missed a layup on the ensuing possession that
would have made it a three-point game. The Bulldogs proceeded to go
on a 9-1 run capped by Steve Klass' third 3-pointer of the day to
put the game out of reach with 2:25 to go.
"Credit goes to them," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "We double-teamed their post players, and they went 50
percent on threes.
"Once again, we didn't make open perimeter shots. We have good
shooters, we just haven't developed the confidence to make them in
a game."
Tech shot 33 percent from the field including a 2-of-20 mark from
behind the 3-point arc. The Huskies committed just eight turnovers
compared to UMD's 18, but that margin was negated by a 39-30
rebound advantage for the visitors.
Three Huskies finished in double figures led by Baugh's 11 points.
Fedrick Bowe notched his first double-double of
the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Robby
Springborn also tallied 10 points.
Michigan Tech will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 29) with
another home game. The Huskies will take on Finlandia at the SDC
Gym at 3 p.m.
