HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech outscored Alma 38-19 in the
second half to come away with a 66-46 victory in the men's
basketball home opener at the SDC Gym tonight. The Huskies held the
Scots to just three field goals in the second half to improve to
2-1 on the season.
"I was disappointed with our execution in the first half, but we
came out and played better in the second," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "I thought we had good balance tonight.
"We need to continue to play the game hard and play our game
regardless of the opponent. If we do that, we should be a pretty
good team."
Tech led by as many as eight in the first half, but the margin was
closed to 28-27 at the intermission after a three-quarter court
shot by Alma's Jordan Redditt at the buzzer.
An 8-0 Huskies' run that ended at the 12:24 mark and included an
authoritative dunk by Fedrick Bowe put the hosts on top
41-31.
Alma was within six with 11:47 to play before Mike
Szatko tallied five straight points and opened another Tech run
this one a 14-0 spurt. The lead grew to as many as 23 before
the final tally of 66-44.
Tech freshman Brian Olley led all players in the game with 12
points and seven rebounds off the bench. Szatko added 11 points
with the help of a 3-of-3 night from 3-point range. Eight other
Huskies had points including three Bowe, Chris
Baugh and Georgio Holt with nine apiece.
The Scots shot 52.9 percent in the first half but finished the game
at 32.4 percent from the field. They did hold a 38-29 rebounding
edge. Tech shot 42.3 percent from the floor and committed just 10
turnovers to Alma's 28.
Michigan Tech will remain at home for a Sunday (Nov. 23) contest
vs. Minnesota Duluth. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
