SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. Michigan Tech turned in a strong
game on both ends of the floor to come away with a 66-52 men's
basketball victory over UW-Parkside in the opening day of the
GLIAC/GLVC Challenge tonight. Nine different Huskies scored points
including three in double figures as Tech moved to 1-0 on the
season.
Tech led virtually wire to wire. The defense limited the Rangers to
20 first-half points en route to 10-point lead at halftime.
The Black and Gold opened the second half with five straight points
on a three-point play from Chris
Baugh and a layup from Sean
Geary. The margin grew to as many as 21 less than six minutes
into the stanza.
UWP made a couple runs to cut the margin to 13 midway through the
half and 14 at the 3:16 mark. The Huskies had the answer each time
to put away their sixth win in eight games all-time vs.
UW-Parkside.
Final shooting percentages favored the Huskies 50-35. Tech also
held a 42-30 rebounding advantage.
Robby Springborn tallied a team-high 12 points to
go with five rebounds and four assists. Geary added 10 points, five
boards and four assists. Freshman Mike
Hojnacki scored 10 points and pulled down five boards in his
collegiate debut.
Parkside's LaVontay Fenderson tallied a game-high 25 points on
8-of-18 field goal shooting and 9-of-12 free throw accuracy.
Michigan Tech will look to remain undefeated tomorrow when it takes
on Lewis in day two of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge. Tipoff at Bud
Cooper Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
