HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech's women's tennis team took
care of business with a 6-3 home victory over Lake Superior State
today at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 5-4 overall
in their final regular season match of the fall.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles behind wins at the
top two flights. Silvia Oliveros and Nathalia Rondelli combined for
an 8-3 win at No. 1, while Victoria Zhilkina and Asel Otunchieva
moved to a perfect 9-0 on the season at No. 2 with an 8-5
triumph.
All four Tech players were victorious in singles as well. Zhilkina
lost just two games in a straight sets win over Ingrid Pflieger.
Oliveros won at No. 2, and Rondelli posted a come-from-behind 4-6,
6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3.
The Huskies played without Samantha Jang-Stewart, who was out with
illness. That meant Otunchieva and Stoll played a position higher
in the lineup than usual. Otunchieva made the most of it with a
6-4, 7-6 (5) decision at No. 4.
"This was our most complete win of the season," said head coach
Mike Axford. "Doubles came out and set the tone for singles. Asel
played a very solid match and locked up the win for us.
"This was a big step forward for us, and hopefully we can keep the
momentum as we head into the GLIAC Tournament."
Michigan Tech will take part in the league tournament beginning
Saturday (Oct. 25) in Midland, Mich.
