STROM JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB, NEARS 500 REBOUND
CLUB
Senior Tim Strom scored 23 points last Thursday (Jan.
17) in a 67-48 win over Wayne State to run his career point total
to 1,001. The 6-7 forward was the 21st player in school history to
reach the 1,000-point club. Strom, who also owns 499 career
rebounds, can become just the 12th player in Tech history to reach
both the 1,000-point and 500-rebound milestones with his next
board. Strom averages 14.3 points and 5.7 rebounds on the
season.
SPRINGBORN RIPS OFF 26-POINT HALF VS.
HILLSDALE
Junior Robby Springborn scored 28 points vs. Hillsdale
last Saturday (Jan. 19) with 26 of those points coming in the
second half. The 5-11 guard has become the Huskies top scorer over
the last seven games with a 20.4 average over that span. Springborn
notched a 31-point effort at Northwood back on Jan. 10 and has
reached the 20-point mark five times this season. His season
average for all games is 12.9 points per contest.
FOWLER GAINING VALUABLE PLAYING TIME
Don Fowler registered career highs with 13 points
and six rebounds vs. Hillsdale last Saturday (Jan. 19). The effort
was more than double his season averages of 6.1 points and 2.5
boards per game. The true freshman has started 15 of the team's 17
games this season. The last Michigan Tech true freshman to start as
many games was Radayl Richardson in the 2003-04 season.
DECADE OF SUCCESS
Michigan Tech owns one of the most successful programs in the GLIAC
since Jan. 1, 2000, with a 167-79 (.679 pct) record. During the
decade, the Huskies have won three GLIAC Championships, qualified
for the NCAA Tournament four times and participated in the GLIAC
Tournament all seven opportunities.
HISTORY VS. ASHLAND, FERRIS STATE
Michigan Tech take on Ashland for the 16th time and Ferris State
for the 99th time this week. The Huskies are 9-6 vs. AU and 50-48
all-time vs. FSU. Tech lost at Ashland a year ago and split its two
games with Ferris State. The last six games vs. FSU have been
decided by an average margin of 3.5 points.
GEARY INCREASING PRODUCTION AS STARTER
Point guard Sean Geary has started each of the last four
games for Michigan Tech and has nearly doubled all of his
statistical averages as a starter. The 5-10 junior set a
career-high with five steals vs. Hillsdale last Saturday (Jan. 19).
The week before, he notched a career-high 10 rebounds at Northwood
(Jan. 10). Geary has played in 69 career games and started 10 of
those.
HUSKY BITES
Michigan Tech is 8-1 when leading at the half and 1-7 when
trailing. The Huskies are also 7-1 in night games and 2-7 in day
contests ... Michigan Tech has kept its turnovers to 10 or less in
five different games this season and are 5-0 in those contests ...
Tech has nine games remaining on its 2007-08 schedule, with six of
those coming at home and three on the road ... The Huskies have
played their 17 games this season in six different states (Indiana,
Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin) ... Head
coach Kevin Luke will coach his 400th career game at
Ferris State on Feb. 9. The 14th year skipper is 256-139 in his
career.
HEAD COACH KEVIN LUKE
Head Coach Kevin Luke, who is in his 14th season at Michigan
Tech, is the winningest coach in the program's history. The
four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of
the Year (1994-95, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2003-04) who was the 2002-03
National Coach of the Year owns a 256-139 all-time record
(.648).
