SPRINGBORN TOPS 30-POINT MARK AT NORTHWOOD
Junior Robby Springborn tallied the first 30-point game
by a Michigan Tech player this season with 31 in a 74-64 overtime
victory at Northwood last Thursday (Jan. 10). The 5-11 guard added
11 more points on Saturday (Jan. 12) in a 60-55 triumph at Saginaw
Valley State. Since a Dec. 21 game vs. Minnesota Duluth a
span of five games, Springborn is averaging 21.0 points.
STROM NEEDS 22 FOR 1,000
Senior Tim Strom needs 22 points to become the 21st
1,000-point scorer in Michigan Tech history. The 6-7 forward also
owns 486 career rebounds. He is looking to become just the 12th
player in school history to reach both the 1,000-point and
500-rebound milestones. Strom leads the team in scoring on the
season at 13.9 points.
FEDRICK COLLECTS THIRD DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Junior Fedrick Bowe moved into the team lead in
rebounding by ripping down 25 boards in two games last week. The
6-5 forward notched his third double-double of the season at
Northwood with 10 points and 14 rebounds. He followed that up with
six points and 11 rebounds at Saginaw Valley State. Bowe's 6.5
rebounds per game average ranks 11th in the GLIAC.
DECADE OF SUCCESS
Michigan Tech owns one of the most successful programs in the GLIAC
since Jan. 1, 2000, with a 166-78 (.680 pct) record. During the
decade, the Huskies have won three GLIAC Championships, qualified
for the NCAA Tournament four times and participated in the GLIAC
Tournament all seven opportunities.
HISTORY VS. WAYNE STATE, HILLSDALE
Michigan Tech will face Wayne State for the 70th time in the
series, which began in 1949. The Warriors own a 46-23 all-time
advantage, but the teams have each won five of the last 10
meetings. The Huskies trail Hillsdale, 23-22, in that series. The
Chargers claimed a 77-61 win in Hillsdale a year ago, but the
Huskies had won the previous five in a row.
GEARY GETS FIRST TWO STARTS
Junior point guard Sean Geary started his first two games of
the season last week and made it count. The 5-10 Geary notched six
points, a career-high 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals in
an overtime win at Northwood (Jan. 10). He then had three points,
two rebounds and two assists at Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 12). For
the week, Geary played 65 minutes at point guard and did not commit
a turnover.
HUSKY BITES
Michigan Tech is 7-1 when leading at the half and 1-6 when
trailing. The Huskies are also 6-1 in night games and 2-6 in day
contests ... Tech has 11 games remaining on its 2007-08 schedule,
with eight of those coming at home and three on the road ... The
Huskies have played their first 15 games in six different states
(Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin)
... Head coach Kevin Luke will coach his 400th career game at
Ferris State on Feb. 9. The 14th year skipper is 255-138 in his
career.
LOW TURNOVERS EQUALS WINS
Michigan Tech committed just 14 turnovers combined in the two games
last week eight at Northwood and a season-low six at Saginaw
Valley State. The Huskies have kept their turnovers to 10 or less
in five different games this season and are 5-0 in those
contests.
HEAD COACH KEVIN LUKE
Head Coach Kevin Luke, who is in his 14th season at Michigan
Tech, is the winningest coach in the program's history. The
four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of
the Year (1994-95, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2003-04) who was the 2002-03
National Coach of the Year owns a 255-138 all-time record
(.649).
