Tech's Oliveros Moves to 2-0 at Number One Singles
HOUGHTON, Mich. - Less than 24 hours removed from a marathon
match against Mercyhurst, the Michigan Tech women's tennis team
played another today. The Huskies went five hours against Ashland
before falling, 6-3, at the Gates Tennis Center.
Unlike yesterday when Huskies' doubles pairs pulled out two of
three points, they were shut out by the Eagles.
Silvia Oliveros and Nathalia Rondelli were downed, 8-6, at number
one doubles. Nicole Kirch and Heather Neff were equally as close,
but lost, 9-7, at number three. Samantha Jang-Stewart and Asel
Otunchieva were knocked off, 8-4, at number two.
Singles proved to be a brighter spot. Oliveros won in straight
sets, 6-2, 6-4, to go 2-0 at the top spot in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Kirch and Otunchieva both
won three-set affairs. Kirch was a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8 in super
tiebreaker played as the deciding set) winner at number two
singles. Otunchieva also came back from a set down to win, 4-6,
6-4, 6-4, at number four.
Jang-Stewart claimed her opening number three singles set before
being set back, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2.
"We started out slow and could never quite get going," said head
coach Mike Axford. "Doubles was a struggle, and it was tough to
come back after Ashland had become more confident."
Michigan Tech (1-2, 0-2 GLIAC) will take a week off of dual match
play to take part in the ITA Great Lakes Regional in Indianapolis
this weekend (Sept. 14-16). The regional will feature a 64-player
singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw.
