Senior Jenna Bartels Records Game Highs of 19 Points, Nine
Rebounds
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech withstood a late Northern
Michigan charge to claim a 57-50 victory over the Wildcats in the
regular season finale for both teams. The Huskies (18-8 overall,
12-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) will now wait
on the results of other games in the league to determine where they
will begin play in the league tournament on Tuesday (Feb. 27).
Senior Jenna Bartels had a fitting end to her career at the SDC Gym
on Senior Day with game highs of 19 points and nine rebounds.
NMU turned a 51-38 deficit under six minutes into a 51-50 score
with 2:40 to play. During the stretch, the Wildcats went
four-of-four from the field and the Huskies missed all seven of
their shots.
Bartels was fouled on an offensive put-back at the 2:17 mark and
broke Tech's four-minute drought with two free throws. After a
scoreless possession for each team, NMU had the ball trailing by
three with 33 seconds left.
The Wildcats opted to try for two, and Bartels blocked Kelsey
Deacon scoop shot attempt, then grabbed the rebound. Bartels was
fouled again and put the game away with two more foul shots.
"I thought we came off our 10-day layoff pretty well by building an
early lead," said head coach John Barnes. "Their shots were falling
in the second half and you expect a rivalry game to come down to
the wire."
Tech had a 10-point bulge within the first four minutes of the game
at 11-1. Katie Wysocky, who had made four three-pointers all
season, drained a pair of triples and had 10 points in the first 10
minutes.
The Huskies went into the halftime locker room with a 28-18
advantage.
Sophomore Alicia Schnedier had 13 points, five rebounds and four
assists. Sarah Stream (11) and Wysocky (10) also finished in double
figures.
Tech held edges in shooting percentage (38-36) and rebounding
(34-29) in the game.
Michigan Tech will take part in its record 17th consecutive GLIAC
Tournament beginning Tuesday (Feb. 27). Where the Huskies go
depends on the outcome of the Ferris State-Grand Valley State
contest. If FSU wins, Tech will head to GVSU. If FSU loses, Tech
will go to Lake Superior State.
Notes: Bartels tallied three three-pointers in the game to move
within three of the school record for career triples (141) ...
Bartels and Ashley Zehren, who missed her final season because of
injury, were honored during a Senior Day ceremony following the
game.
