Zimmerman Drills Five Threes for 15 Points
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- A slow start and 25 turnovers proved too much
for Michigan Tech to overcome in a 65-42 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball loss to
15th-ranked Grand Valley State tonight at the SDC Gym. The Lakers
(19-5, 12-3 GLIAC) jumped out to leads of 11-2 and 20-4 and held on
to earn the season split with the Huskies (17-8, 11-6 GLIAC), who
won a 64-59 decision at GVSU earlier this season (Jan. 3).
Grand Valley led, 37-22, at the half before the Huskies made a run
to cut the gap to single digits. Katie Zimmerman's fifth
three-pointer of the game at the 11:48 mark made the score, 45-39.
The Lakers proceeded to score six straight points and finish the
game on a 20-3 run.
"We struggled on defense early in the first half and dug ourselves
too big of a hole against a good team like Grand Valley," said head
coach John Barnes. "We had way too many turnovers, and that's
disappointing because you hope to play better at home."
Zimmerman's 15-point total tied for game-high honors. Alicia
Schneider added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Tech's
top scoring duo of Sarah Stream and Katie Wysocky were held to 11
points combined.
The Huskies compiled a 28-25 rebounding advantage, but 25 turnovers
compared to 12 for GVSU told the story of the game.
Michigan Tech will have 10 days to recuperate before hosting rival
Northern Michigan on the final day of the regular season, Saturday,
Feb. 24. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be featured
nationally by CSTV on a broadband video broadcast
