HOUGHTON, Mich. To say things were clicking tonight for
the Michigan Tech men's basketball team may be an understatement.
The Huskies shot 57 percent, had 11 more assists than turnovers,
and held a 37-20 rebounding advantage in defeating Minnesota Duluth
by an 82-57 margin at the SDC Gym.
The trio of Robby Springborn, Tim
Strom and Kris Alpers combined for 59 of the team's 82
points. For Springborn, it was a career-high 24 points. His only
other career 20-point game came earlier this season in Tech's first
meeting with UMD.
"This was our most complete game all year," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "Our shooting percentage was up. Our turnovers were down.
And we defended pretty well especially against (Jordan)
Nuness."
Nuness, who entered the game averaging 19 points per game, scored
just eight on 3-of-12 shooting.
The Bulldogs trailed nearly the entire game but made things
interesting with a 9-0 run that spanned the two halves. Rhett
McDonald's 3-pointer 11 seconds into the second half pulled UMD
within 34-33. Tech answered by scoring nine straight points as part
of a 24-4 run that pushed the lead to 58-37 with 13:04 to play.
Springborn had 18 of his squad's 24 points during the stretch.
"Robby gave us the offensive edge early in the second half," said
Luke. "He had some open looks in part because we had success in the
post in the first half."
Tech led by as many as 30 before settling for the final margin of
25. The Huskies made 63 percent from the floor in the second stanza
including a blistering 71 percent from 3-point range.
Strom finished with 18 points including an alley-oop dunk in the
second half. Alpers tacked on 17 points and six rebounds. Fedrick
Bowe continued his hot play with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Point guards Brandon Ball and Sean
Geary combined for 11 assists with no turnovers.
Michigan Tech (6-5) will have nine days off before traveling to
Evansville, Ind., for a battle with Southern Indiana on Dec.
30.
Notes: Michigan Tech is 3-0 at home ... The total of 82 points was
the Huskies' highest of the season and highest since Feb. 19, 2005,
in an 85-56 win at Saginaw Valley State.
