HOUGHTON, Mich. Perhaps the most anticipated Michigan
Tech-Finlandia matchup in the series history turned into the
most-lopsided outcome in the series history as the host Huskies
scored a 73-37 decision at the SDC Gym tonight. Fedrick Bowe
notched his second double-double of the season and Kevin Maloney
drained four 3-pointers to lift Michigan Tech to a 5-5 record on
the season.
Tech controlled play on both ends of the floor, shooting 52 percent
from the field while holding the Lions to 25 percent. The Huskies
also registered a 38-29 rebounding advantage to remain undefeated
in seven games all-time vs. FU.
"We shot the ball really well tonight and defended as well as we
have all year" said Michigan Tech head coach Kevin Luke.
Tech opened the game with a 14-6 advantage as Fedrick Bowe tallied
seven points in the opening 6:35. Later in a half, a 9-0 Huskies
run pushed the margin to 12. The halftime score was, 32-22.
The Black and Gold opened the second stanza with a 13-0 run to blow
the game open. Bowe tallied six points during the run to break his
career high for the third straight game. The junior forward
finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds both game highs.
Maloney scored 14 points and Robby Springborn also finished in
double figures with 10 points. The Huskies' leading scorer on the
season, Tim Strom, scored just five points but chipped in with
eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Brandon Ball turned in a nice stat line with six points, five
assists, three steals and two blocks.
Michigan Tech returns to action Friday (Dec. 21) when it hosts
Minnesota Duluth at the SDC Gym. Opening tipoff is slated for 7:30
p.m.
Notes: All 13 available Huskies played in the game, and 10
different players scored points ... Tech's bench outscored
Finlandia's, 34-0 ... FU made just four field goals and shot 16
percent in the second half.
