Box Score
DULUTH, Minn. Robbie Springborn scored a career-high 20
points and was one of four Michigan Tech players in double figures
as the Huskies knocked off previously undefeated Minnesota Duluth,
62-58, tonight at Romano Gymnasium as part of The Edge Basketball
Classic. Springborn nailed a timely 3-pointer with late in the game
and added two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to ice the Huskies'
first win of the season.
Michigan Tech used a total team effort as 12 different players saw
action. Josh Makela (11 points), Tim Strom (10) and Kris Alpers
(10) all scored in double figures for the visitors, but the play of
many others had just as large an impact.
Brandon Ball did not score, but dished out four assists and split
time with Makela in guarding UMD's top gun Jordan Nuness. Chris
Baugh played just nine minutes, but converted a three-point play at
the 3:28 mark to push Tech's lead back to seven. Kyle Pullen had
six points and four rebounds and provided the Huskies a post
presence as Alpers sat with foul trouble.
"This is about as good as our box score has looked in a long time,"
said Tech skipper Kevin Luke in regards to the balance on the stat
sheet. "Tim (Strom) didn't have a great night offensively, but
other guys stepped up and got the job done. We were able to get
points in the post, and we made Nuness work hard for everything he
got."
Tech's seven-point lead with 3:28 to play nearly evaporated. Nuness
swished a 3-pointer and Brian Sykora added a layup with 36 seconds
left as the Huskies came up empty on three straight trips down the
floor. Sean Geary was fouled with 29 seconds left, but missed the
front end of a one-and-one.
Nuness had a good look at a go-ahead 3-pointer with 10 seconds
left, but Geary rebounded it. Springborn then iced the win at the
line.
Springborn was 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 at the foul line en
route to snapping his previous career high of 16 points. Strom, who
finished with a team-high seven rebounds, scored all 10 of his
points in the first half and saw constant double- and triple-teams
in the second half.
Tech shot a remarkable 56.5 percent from the floor compared to 41.5
percent for UMD. The hosts held a 30-25 rebounding margin.
Michigan Tech (1-2) will return to action tomorrow (Nov. 24) at The
Edge Classic with a 3 p.m. (CT) tipoff against undefeated Minnesota
State Mankato.
