MIDLAND, Mich. Michigan Tech split a pair of matches at
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament
today. The fifth-seeded Huskies swept past #4 seed Mercyhurst, 5-0,
in the quarterfinal round before being knocked off by #1 Northwood,
5-2.
"We played strong tennis today," said head coach Mike Axford. "I
was happy to see us avenge our earlier season loss to Mercyhurst.
We did a nice job to battle against Northwood, too."
Tech swept doubles action in the opening match with scores of 8-4,
8-4, and 8-5 at number one, two, and three, respectively. In
singles, Amy Palmgren gained a 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles. Asel
Otunchieva then put away the team match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at
number five. The other four singles matches were left unfinished
since the team decision was determined.
In the semifinal, it was the #1-seeded Timberwolves gaining all
three doubles points with the closest score at 8-3.
Tech gained wins at number four and six singles both in
three sets. Samantha Jang-Stewart downed Maelys Scerri with a third
set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at number four singles. Nathalia
Rondelli dropped her first set (5-7) before wins of 6-3 and 6-2 in
the final two sets.
Northwood finished off the team win with Darina Berkova's 6-1, 6-4
victory over Amy Palmgren at number one, and Ashley Neumann's 6-3,
6-3 triumph over Silvia Oliveros at number two.
Michigan Tech (8-5) will take on sixth-seeded Wayne State tomorrow
morning in the GLIAC Tournament third-place match.
