WOMEN'S TENNIS SPLITS MATCHES AT GLIAC TOURNAMENT

MIDLAND, Mich. — Michigan Tech split a pair of matches at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament today. The fifth-seeded Huskies swept past #4 seed Mercyhurst, 5-0, in the quarterfinal round before being knocked off by #1 Northwood, 5-2.

"We played strong tennis today," said head coach Mike Axford. "I was happy to see us avenge our earlier season loss to Mercyhurst. We did a nice job to battle against Northwood, too."

Tech swept doubles action in the opening match with scores of 8-4, 8-4, and 8-5 at number one, two, and three, respectively. In singles, Amy Palmgren gained a 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles. Asel Otunchieva then put away the team match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number five. The other four singles matches were left unfinished since the team decision was determined.

In the semifinal, it was the #1-seeded Timberwolves gaining all three doubles points with the closest score at 8-3.

Tech gained wins at number four and six singles — both in three sets. Samantha Jang-Stewart downed Maelys Scerri with a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at number four singles. Nathalia Rondelli dropped her first set (5-7) before wins of 6-3 and 6-2 in the final two sets.

Northwood finished off the team win with Darina Berkova's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Amy Palmgren at number one, and Ashley Neumann's 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Silvia Oliveros at number two.

Michigan Tech (8-5) will take on sixth-seeded Wayne State tomorrow morning in the GLIAC Tournament third-place match.
