HOUGHTON, Mich. Despite playing some strong points at the
Gates Tennis Center today, the Michigan Tech women's tennis team
couldn't overcome perennial Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference power Northwood. The visiting Timberwolves came away
with a 9-0 victory.
Samantha Jang-Stewart and Asel Otunchieva turned in the closest
doubles match of the day. The duo was clipped, 8-6, by Nicole
Kromer and Maelys Scerri at number three.
In singles, Jang-Stewart overcame a 6-2 first set loss and won by
the same score in the second set. Her opponent at number four
singles, Scerri, then finished off a super tiebreaker in the third
set, 10-8.
Heather Neff turned in a tight match at number six singles before
falling, 6-4, 7-5.
"We played some good tennis, but they seemed to come up the with
big points when they needed it," said Michigan Tech head coach Mike
Axford. "We need to use today's match to motivate us to be ready
for SVSU tomorrow."
Michigan Tech (6-4, 4-4 GLIAC) will host league rival Saginaw
Valley State tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Notes: Today's loss snapped a four-match winning Michigan Tech
winning streak.
