Tech Falls to 8-8 on Season
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech ran into a hot-shooting Lake
Superior State team today at the SDC Gym, and it was the host
Lakers who came away with a 71-63 victory. LSSU made 61 percent of
their field goals in the second half including six three-pointers
en route to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
men's basketball victory.
Tech (8-8, 3-4 GLIAC) led by as many as seven points in the first
half before back-to-back three-pointers capped a 14-3 run by the
Lakers to turn things around. Josh Makela's free throws with five
seconds left in the half made it a 23-22 LSSU edge at the
intermission.
Lake Superior State (5-8, 3-3 GLIAC) built the lead to nine points
(37-28) with 16:51 to play, but Tech answered with a 13-1 spurt for
a 41-38 advantage four minutes later.
The teams battled to a 50-all score with 5:28 to go after a put
back by Fedrick Bowe and layup from Radayl Richardson erased a
four-point deficit. The Lakers drained back-to-back three-pointers
to made it a six-point game, and the Huskies got not closer than
five for the remaining four minutes. Lake State made seven-of-nine
free throws to seal its win.
Tim Strom led the Huskies with 18 points and five assists.
Richardson tallied 17 points, but was the only other Tech player in
double figures. Bowe notched a team-high five rebounds in 11
minutes of action.
LSSU finished the game at 51 percent from the field, while MTU
registered 44 percent. The Lakers also benefitted from a 56 percent
mark (10-of-18) from behind the arc compared to 29 percent
(five-of-18) by the Huskies.
Michigan Tech will have a week off before hosting Ferris State next
Saturday (Jan. 13) at 3 p.m.
