ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Despite scoring just 13 points in the first
half and trailing by 13 points in the second half, Michigan Tech's
men's basketball team had opportunities to upset #10 Grand Valley
State tonight. The Huskies battled to a 40-all tie with 1:10 to go
before finally falling, 48-43.
With 17:05 remaining in the second half the score 29-16 in favor of
the hosts, MTU put together a 18-3 run. Josh Makela accounted for
five points during the stretch and Radayl Richardson swished two
three-pointers in a row to give Tech a 34-32 lead with 6:30 to
go.
Richardson missed a triple that could have given the Huskies a
four-point lead before GVSU's Jason Jamerson grabbed the rebound
and drilled a three-pointer on the other end. Four minutes later,
Richardson tied the game at 40 with a jumpshot, but Jamerson
answered with another three with 53 seconds left.
Turnovers on its next two possessions by MTU led to four free
throws by GVSU and a 47-40 advantage. Tim Strom made a
three-pointer with 13 seconds left, but the Huskies could get no
closer.
Tech held Grand Valley to 30 percent from the floor, but shot just
28 percent itself. The Huskies outrebounded the Lakers, 41-38, but
GVSU converted 15 free throws compared to just six for the
visitors.
MTU scored the first six points of the game, but trailed at
halftime after shooting 19 percent from the field. Grand Valley
made two three-pointers in the final 40 seconds of the opening half
including one at the buzzer from Jamerson to turn a five-point lead
into a 24-13 bulge at the intermission.
Richardson tallied 13 points and eight rebounds -- both team highs
for the game. Makela added 12 points and five boards. Strom was
limited to eight points -- just the third time he's failed to score
in double figures all season.
Michigan Tech, 8-7 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC play, will look to
rebound against Lake Superior State at the SDC Gym on Saturday
(Jan. 6). Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
