Huskies Win Fifth Straight; Now 5-1 in GLIAC
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Michigan Tech overcame a 15-point second
half deficit to upset #6 Grand Valley State, 64-59, tonight in
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball
action at the GVSU Fieldhouse. Freshman Katie Wysocky made layups
on three straight Tech possessions late in the game, and Alicia
Schneider and Jenna Bartels iced the Huskies' win at the free throw
line.
Grand Valley State expanded a one-point halftime lead to 15 points
(44-29) by the 14:45 mark of the second stanza. The Huskies
answered with a 12-0 run spurred by two three-pointers from Bartels
to cut the deficit to 44-41 just three minutes later.
Schneider's jumper tied the contest at 48-all with 5:55 to play,
but the Lakers took the lead right back on a three-pointer from
Erin Cyplik. MTU then scored nine consecutive points including four
straight from Wysocky to lead, 57-51, at the 1:35 mark. Cyplik hit
another triple to make it a three-point game before Wysocky cashed
in on an offensive rebound and putback with 48 seconds to go.
Schneider drained three-of-four free throws in the final 33 seconds
and Bartels made it a two-possession game at :07 with a pair of
foul shots to ice the win.
"I'm really happy for our players," said head coach John Barnes.
"They showed a lot of grit to bounce back from the big deficit.
Then they made the plays when they had to at the end."
Tech overcame 19 turnovers by shooting 53 percent from the floor
and holding GVSU to 34 percent. The Huskies also knocked in 50
percent (4-of-8) of its tries from behind the arc.

6-of-9 shooting. Bartels notched 15 points and seven rebounds,
while Wysocky had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10
rebounds.
MTU's starting five accounted for all 64 of the team's points. Lena
Widman was the Huskies' fourth player in double digits in points
with 13. Schneider had seven points, and also made a big
contribution on the defensive end by holding GVSU's leading scorer
Crystal Zick (17.3 ppg) to just two points.
The win was the fifth straight for Tech and its ninth in the last
10 games. The Huskies are now second in the GLIAC North Division
standings behind Lake Superior State.
Michigan Tech will return home for a three-game stand beginning
Saturday (Jan. 6) to host Upper Peninsula rival Lake Superior
State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
