Wysocky and Zimmerman Score 20 Points Apiece
MIDLAND, Mich. -- Twenty-point games from freshmen Katie Wysocky
and Katie Zimmerman propelled the Michigan Tech women's basketball
team to an 85-65 victory at Northwood this afternoon. The duo
combined to go 11-of-15 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free
throw line in the Huskies victory.
Tech played a near-flawless first half en route to a 40-19 bulge at
the intermission. Katie Zimmerman came off the bench to tally 12
points with the help of three three-pointers. The Huskies shot 60
percent from the field and limited the hosts to 21 percent in the
frame.
MTU expanded that advantage to as many as 35 points in the second
half on back-to-back buckets from Wysocky and Sarah Stream.
Northwood battled back to within 17 points under a minute to play
before the Huskies settled for a 20-point win.
"It was nice to see our freshmen step up with big games today,"
said head coach John Barnes. "We turned the ball over too many
times, but we shot really well and our defense played a very good
game. When we can do that, we have a great chance to win."
Tech finished the game at 59.5 percent from the field including a
6-of-10 mark from long range. The Huskies also used a 40-29
rebounding advantage and an 81-percent mark from the free throw
line (29-of-36) to overcome a 20-8 deficit in turnovers.
Wysocky tallied nine rebounds, four assists and five steals to go
with her game-high 20 points. Zimmerman was four-of-five from long
range and 8-of-10 from the free throw stripe to register her first
career 20-point game.
Stream added 17 points and three assists. Alicia Schneider also
reached double figures with 10 points to go with seven rebounds,
five assists and two blocks.
Michigan Tech (13-7 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) will return home after a
three week layoff to face Gannon on Thursday (Feb. 1). Tipoff at
the SDC Gym is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Notes: Zimmerman's previous career high was 14 points vs. Northwood
the first time the teams met (Dec. 7) ... Tech gained the series
sweep of Northwood with the win ... Wysocky tallied her fifth
20-point game of the season.
