Huskies Earn Season Split with Cardinals
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Katie Wysocky poured in 18
second-half points to lift Michigan Tech to a 68-65 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball victory at Saginaw
Valley State tonight. The freshman forward combined with sophomore
Sarah Stream to tally 40 of the team's total.
Tech led by as many as 14 in a turnover-laden first half. The two
teams combined for 22 miscues in the opening 20 minutes. The
Huskies gained their first double-digit lead at the 2:52 mark as
Jenna Bartels nailed a three-pointer off an assist from Danae
Danen. One minute later, Alicia Schneider hit Tech's second triple
of the game for a 28-14 advantage. SVSU ended the half with
momentum from a half-court shot that capped an 8-0 run.
SVSU worked its way into a 34-33 lead at the 14:31 mark of the
second half, then six minutes later capped a 12-1 run for a
nine-point bulge. The Huskies responded with an 11-2 run topped off
by a Stream three-pointer to tie the game at 51-all with 5:59 to
go.
Wysocky scored five straight points to give the Huskies a small
advantage, but the Cardinals evened things up once again at 63 with
1:00 to play. Stream hit a tough, pull-up jumper in the paint at
:48, then the Tech defense held the hosts without a field goal
until Jenna Schroeder made a bucket at the buzzer for the final
three-point margin.
"We showed a lot of poise to battle back from that nine-point hole
in the second half," said head coach John Barnes. "Katie (Wysocky)
gave us a huge spark in the second half."
Wysocky tallied 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the
contest. Stream added 22 points and four assists. Schneider was the
only other Husky in double figures with 12 to go with seven
boards.
Tech shot 50 percent from the field including a blistering 59
percent mark in the second half. SVSU gained a 39-33 advantage in
rebounds, but was limited to 40 percent from the field including
just 20 percent from long range.
Michigan Tech (12-7, 6-5 GLIAC) will head to Midland, Mich., for a
