Wysocky Tallies Career Highs of 24 Points and 16
Rebounds
DETROIT -- Wayne State overcame a 12-point second half deficit
and scored twice in the final 48 seconds to defeat Michigan Tech,
62-61, tonight at the Matthaei Center. Katie Wysocky tallied career
highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds in the loss, which dropped the
Huskies record to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Tech held a 46-34 lead with 15:31 left in the game before WSU
started chipping away at it. The Warriors had it down to six but
the Huskies regained a 10-point margin with 9:23 to play. Although
they scored just one point over the next four and a half minutes,
the visitors maintained a three-point lead. Wysocky's three-pointer
at the 4:51 mark left the score, 49-43.
MTU then went until Alicia Schneider's lay-up at :43 before scoring
again. That kept it a three-point game. WSU's Joy Nash made a
pull-up jumper nine seconds later, then the Warriors got a steal.
Monique George scored on a offensive rebound an put back with nine
seconds to play for the Warriors first lead of the half.
Nash was fouled after another Tech turnover, but she missed both
shots, giving the Huskies one last chance to win it. Sarah Stream's
three-point attempt from 24 feet glanced off the backboard as the
final horn sounded.
The Black and Gold didn't help themselves at the free throw line,
where they were eight-of-18 (44.4 percent). The Huskies held a
42-37 rebounding advantage, but committed 21 turnovers compared to
14 by the Warriors.
Wysocky, who tallied 11 points and nine rebounds in the first half,
came away with the second double-double of her career. Stream added
14 points, while Jenna Bartels also reached double digits with
11.
Wayne led, 24-17, with six minutes remaining in the first half
before the Huskies turned things around. Alicia Schneider drained a
wide open three-pointer to kick start a 16-2 run over the next four
minutes. Sarah Stream knocked down a three-pointer from the right
corner and two more jumpers during the run. Tech outscored the
Warriors, 19-6, in the final six minutes of the half for a 36-30
lead at the break.
Michigan Tech will remain on the road and face Hillsdale on
Saturday (Jan. 20). Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
