Huskies Fall to 11-5 Overall and 5-3 in GLIAC Play
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Ferris State made 63 percent of its first
half field goals and 50 percent for the game to defeat Michigan
Tech, 77-64, in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
women's basketball game this afternoon at the SDC Gym. Tech (11-5,
5-3 GLIAC) was within five points late in the game before the
Bulldogs (10-5, 4-3 GLIAC) used a 9-0 run to put the game away.
FSU bombed in seven three-pointers in the first half including five
of its first six attempts from behind the arc to take a 27-19 lead
at the 7:31 mark. The Huskies kept it a five point margin before
the visitors ended the half on a 12-4 run.
Tech battled to 55-50 at the 11:13 mark of the second half as
Alicia Schneider hit her second three-pointer of the game. Ferris
State pushed the lead back to 12 points four minutes later before
the Huskies scored seven straight to once again make it a
five-point game.
FSU's Kristin Reinhart made a jumpshot on the next possession for a
66-59 advantage. Sarah Stream had a good look at a three-pointer
that would have made it a four-point game. It didn't fall, and the
Bulldogs ended the game outscoring the Huskies, 13-5.
"Ferris is a good team," said head coach John Barnes. "They made
shots, and we didn't defend as well as we could have. We need to
play smarter basketball as our schedule doesn't get much easier in
the next few weeks."
Reinhart finished with 21 points, while teammate Rachel Folcik
tallied 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for FSU.
Stream led the Huskies with 15 points and six rebounds. Katie
Zimmerman added 13 points off the bench, and four other players had
eight points apiece.
Ferris cashed in on 10-of-20 three-point attempts and 28-of-56
field goal tries (50 percent). Tech made eight-of-20 from behind
the arc, but was limited to 22-of-62 (35.5 percent) from the
field.
Michigan Tech will hit the road for four straight games starting
Thursday (Jan. 18) at Wayne State. Opening tipoff is scheduled for
5:30 p.m.
