Palmgren Improves Record to 5-1
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Amy Palmgren's 6-1, 6-1 victory at number one
singles provided Michigan Tech with its only point in an 8-1 loss
to visiting Grand Valley State today at Gates Tennis Center. The
Huskies were without the services of number one doubles and number
two singles player Silvia Oliveros, who sat out with injury.
With the absence of Oliveros, Tech's lineup had to be shifted.
Samantha Jang-Stewart and Monika Malinska paired together at number
one doubles. Palmgren played with new partner Katie Lindahl at
number two doubles; and Heather Neff and Whitney Schoep comprised
MTU's three doubles team.
Grand Valley swept the doubles matches with 8-3 pro-set scores at
all three flights.
Palmgren's 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Lindsay Grimmer at number one
singles provided Tech some life. Both Jang-Stewart and Schoep had
chances to claim their first sets, but both lost in tiebreakers.
Jang-Stewart went on to fall in her number three singles match, 7-6
(0), 6-2. Schoep was downed, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at number four.
Malinksa nearly forced a third set in her number two singles match
before succumbing, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Neff and Lindahl, who made her
dual-match season debut at number six singles, both fell in
straight sets as well.
"It was a disappointing loss today," said Huskies Head Coach Mike
Axford. "We were close in many matches, but could not seem to get
ahead. Give Grand Valley credit. They came out and beat us.
"We'll have to move ahead and not look back in tomorrow's
match."
Michigan Tech (4-2, 2-2 GLIAC) will host Ferris State tomorrow at
Gates Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
