T'Wolves Stop Huskies on Fourth Quarter Red Zone
Chances
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech had significant advantages in
time of possession, first downs and total offense, but it was #18
Northwood who came away with a 13-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference football victory in front of 2,020 fans at
Sherman Field today. The Huskies gained 236 yards of total offense
and collected 15 first downs compared to 181 yards and five first
downs for NU.
The game was a defensive battle with seven combined turnovers
between the two teams. Michigan Tech caused the first turnover -- a
fumble which gave the Huskies the ball at the Northwood 24-yard
line. Four plays later, quarterback Drew Schaft scrambled and found
receiver Keith White for a 16-yard touchdown. Alex Tiseo added the
extra point.
Northwood was forced a punt on the ensuing drive and Tech marched
73 yards deep into T'wolves territory again. Schaft was stopped on
fourth-and-inches at the NU 13-yard line, however.
Neither team was able to move the ball in the second quarter, and
the Huskies went into halftime with a 7-0 lead. Northwood gained
only 41 yards in the first half compared to 113 for MTU.
The Timberwolves' second play of the second half tied the game,
7-7, as Kyle Kolbe kept the ball on the option and sprinted 70
yards to paydirt. Five minutes later, a 42-yard field goal attempt
by Tiseo fell short, leaving the score tied.
Schaft threw an interception to start the fourth quarter that was
returned to the Tech 10-yard line. Three plays later Torris Childs
scored for a 13-7 margin. Chris Kollias' point after attempt was
blocked by Erik Lehmann.
Later in the fourth period, the Huskies' defense held Northwood on
downs at midfield. A double-pass play from David Peterson to Marvin
Atkins and two nice rushes by Atkins set up the MTU offense at the
NU 10-yard line. Steve Short's pass was intercepted in the endzone
on fourth down to end the threat.
Kolbe fumbled on Northwood's next offensive play and the Huskies
were back in business at the Northwood 22-yard line. Short picked
up a first down on a quarterback draw to make it first and goal at
the eight. Tech was kept out of the endzone on four straight plays
and Northwood was able to run out the remaining clock.
"It was a good football game," said first-year head coach Tom
Kearly. "I thought we played very well defensively except for one
play. Credit their defense, too. We couldn't capitalize on our two
chances in the red zone at the end of the game."
Kolbe finished as the leading rusher in the game with 97 yards on
18 carries. Atkins carried 18 times for Michigan Tech for 61 yards.
Lee Marana added 35 yards on 14 carries.
Schafted completed seven-of-16 passes for 62 yards. Kolbe was
two-of-eight for 15 yards.
Charleston Hughes and Andre Johnson both tallied a game-high nine
tackles for Northwood. Lehmann had a team-high five stops for the
Huskies.
Notes: Time of possession was 36:41-23:19 in favor of the hosts . .
. Injuries to both centers -- Kurt Troutman and Pat Flannery --
midway through the third quarter affected the Huskies' offense.
