DeMartin, Richardson Score 16 Apiece
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Grand Valley State jumped out to a 14-0 lead
en route to a 67-55 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
men's basketball win over Michigan Tech at the GVSU FIeldhouse
tonight. The 14th-ranked Lakers (21-3, 13-2 GLIAC) converted
17-of-23 free throws and eight-of-14 three-pointers to get the
season split with the Huskies (13-12, 9-7 GLIAC).
GVSU made three three-pointers and led 14-0 by the 15:22 mark of
the first half. Craig Genung finally put Tech on the board with a
layup at the 30 seconds later. The margin was as many as 17 over
the next six minutes before the Huskies scored six straight points
capped by Stephen Folson's tip-in to cut it to 11 at the 8:35 mark.
The hosts quickly answered and led, 37-20, at halftime.
Tech trimmed the margin to single digits by the 13:29 mark as Joe
DeMartin scored six straight points on a three-pointer and a
three-point play. Grand Valley pushed the lead back to 15 points
before Radayl Richardson's three-point play with 8:46 to play made
the score 55-45. The Lakers answered again with four straight
points from Callistus Eziukwu and built the margin to as many as 20
before the final gap of 12.
Richardson and DeMartin shared team-high scoring honors with 16
points each. DeMartin had his with six-of-seven field goal
shooting. No other Husky had more than four points. Bob Evans
snared a team-high five rebounds.
The Lakers shot 42 percent to the Huskies' 41. The hosts also held
slight advantages in rebounds (35-31) and turnovers (11 to MTU's
13). Grand Valley also benefitted from eight more makes at the foul
line and four more three-pointers.
Michigan Tech travels to play at Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 18)
at 3 p.m.
