Katie Zimmerman Scores Career- and Game-High 14 Points
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech scored 16 unanswered points
late in the game to claim a 62-48 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Northwood
tonight at the SDC Gym. The Huskies turned a 46-44 lead at the 6:46
mark into a 62-44 bulge en route to its fourth straight win.
"We grinded out a victory tonight," said fourth-year head coach
John Barnes. "It was hard to get into rhythm because of injuries
and fouls, so we had to rely on defense. That's what got us the
win."
Tech found itself trailing by four with two minutes left in the
opening half, but finished the frame on an 8-0 run thanks to a pair
of three-pointers from Katie Zimmerman and a layup from Sarah
Stream. The hosts held a 30-26 halftime edge.
The lead changed hands four times in the second half before Tech
went on its 16-0 run. Alicia Schneider's first field goal of the
game at 3:40 and Zimmerman's three-point play on the next
possession broke open the game and put the Huskies on top, 53-44.
MTU went on to score the next nine points for an 18-point lead
before the Timberwolves tallied the game's final four points for
the final margin.
Zimmerman finished with a game-high 14 points on four-of-six field
goal shooting and four-of-five free throw shooting. The freshman
was the team's seventh different leading scorer in as many games
this season. Lena Widman added 13 points and a career- and
game-high nine rebounds. Sarah Stream also reached double figures
with 11 points.
Tech shot 46 percent from the field and held NU to 32 percent. The
Huskies also held a 35-26 advantage in rebounding.
Michigan Tech (5-2, 3-0 GLIAC) will host Saginaw Valley State on
Saturday (Dec. 9), with tipoff at the SDC Gym scheduled for 1
p.m.
