Huskies Lead for First 26 Minutes Before Falling,
62-50
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Michigan Tech led Wisconsin-Green Bay for 26
minutes before the Phoenix scored 14 straight points and held on
for a 62-50 victory at the Resch Center tonight. The Huskies (7-6)
remained within a point (47-46) at the 4:37 mark before UWGB (7-6)
made a pair of free throws and its leading scorer Ryan Evanochko
tallied seven straight points to put the game out of reach.
"I was happy with our effort tonight," said head coach Kevin Luke.
"We played MTU-type basketball and made shots early. Unfortunately,
we couldn't sustain it for the full 40 minutes. Give them credit.
They made a nice run to take control in the second half."
Tech shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and led,
27-24, despite being called for 11 fouls compared to four on the
Phoenix. That resulted in starting center Ed Ross playing just six
of the opening 20 minutes because of foul trouble. Junior Kyle
Pullen came off the bench and filled in admirably.
The Huskies matched their biggest lead of the game (36-30) four
minutes into the second half as Robby Springborn drained a
three-pointer. UW-Green Bay answered with the 14-0 run. Evanochko's
back-to-back triples gave the hosts their first lead of the game,
37-36, with 13:57 to play. That lead grew to 44-36 before Sean
Geary's finger roll ended Tech's drought at the 8:28 mark.
Tim Strom drained two jumpers and Huskies' leading scorer Radayl
Richardson scored his only two points of the night to keep the
Huskies close. Then Springborn made it a one-point game under five
minutes by making a steal and taking it the length of the floor for
a layup.
The Phoenix scored two of their 20 made free throws in the game on
the ensuing possession, and Evanochko poured in seven of his 20
second-half points over the next three minutes to make it an
eight-point game. The Huskies would get no closer.
Strom finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists --
all game highs for the Black and Gold. Josh Makela added 11 points
and three assists. Springborn also reached double figures with 10
points and four rebounds.
Tech shot 45 percent for the game and limited the Phoenix to 37
percent. However, the hosts held a 36-26 rebounding advantage and
committed just six turnovers compared to MTU's 13.
The final stat sheet also revealed a large disparity in fouls and
free throws. Tech was whistled for 22 fouls in contrast to seven
for UWGB. The Phoenix also cashed in on 20-of-29 free throw
attempts while the Huskies went to the foul line twice (making
both).
Michigan Tech will wrap up its three-game set at the Oneida Casino
Holiday Classic tomorrow (Dec. 30) at 6 p.m. (ET) vs. Jacksonville
State, which lost to UWGB, 90-67, on Wednesday (Dec. 27).
Notes: Ross got his first start of the season. He had four points
including a two-handed dunk that accounted for the first two points
of the second half ... Kris Alpers, who had started all previous 12
games, did not start and played just two minutes because of an
ankle injury ... UWGB now leads the all-time series over MTU,
7-2.
