Huskies Fall in Opening Game of Oneida Casino Holiday
Classic
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Michigan Tech finished the game on a 14-2
run, but the clock ran out on its upset bid of NCAA Division I
Bowling Green tonight in the first game of the Oneida Casino
Holiday Classic at the Resch Center. The Falcons (8-3) came away
with a 58-46 victory over the Huskies (7-5).
"We needed to knock down open shots and be aggressive from the
opening tip to give ourselves a chance to win, and we didn't do
that," said head coach Kevin Luke. "I thought we rebounded a lot
better in the second half and defended well all game long to hold
this team to 58 points."
Tech held an early 5-3 lead before BGSU rattled off a 12-0 run for
a 10-point lead at the 10 minute mark of the opening half. It
expanded that margin to 29-14 at the break by controlling boards
and turning nine offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance
points.
Six minutes into the second half, the Huskies were able to climb
within 34-25 after Tim Strom scored five points during a 9-0
Huskies run. Bowling Green answered immediately in the form of Ryne
Hamblet, who sank back-to-back three-pointers. That started a 12-0
spurt for the Falcons, which left the score, 46-25, with 8:23 to
play.
The game appeared well in hand at the 3:43 mark when BGSU had its
largest lead of the game of 24 points (56-32). Tech proceeded to
make a charge behind the point guard play of Sean Geary. The
Huskies scored 12 straight points to force the Falcons to re-insert
their starting lineup. There was not enough time left to get it any
closer than the final margin of 12.
Tech outrebounded Bowling Green, 27-14, in the second half to
finish the game with a 44-36 rebounding advantage. The Falcons
committed just four turnovers in the game and held the Huskies to
29 percent field goal shooting.
Strom scored a team-high 13 points to go with five rebounds and
three blocks. Kris Alpers had six points, a team-high eight
rebounds and two blocks. Geary notched five points, three rebounds
and two assists in 20 minutes off the bench.
Michigan Tech will have a day off before returning to action at the
Oneida Casino Holiday Classic Friday (Dec. 29) at 8:30 p.m. (ET).
The Huskies face host Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Notes: Tech had not played against an NCAA Division I opponent in
the regular season since it faced Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Dec. 6,
1999 ... MTU has held three straight opponents under 60 points ...
Senior Stephen Folson did not play because of an injury he
sustained during last Friday's (Dec. 22) win over Minnesota Duluth
... Radayl Richardson, who had averaged 20.7 points over his last
three games, was limited to four points on two-of-nine field goal
shooting.
