Stream, Bartels and Schneider Give Huskies First Win vs. UMD
Since 2000
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech's starting lineup provided all
but four points of its offensive total, but that was more than
enough in a 74-62 victory over non-conference rival Minnesota
Duluth tonight in women's basketball at the SDC. The Huskies
snapped UMD's eight-game winning streak and also put an end to the
Bulldog's seven-game run in the series between the teams.
"This was a hard-fought game and a big confidence boost for us,"
said head coach John Barnes. "We've battled injuries this year, but
I think we proved to ourselves we can play with the elite teams in
the country. Two of our keys for the game were attacking the basket
and rebounding. We did those well, and it paid off."
Both teams' offenses were clicking in a back-and-forth first half.
The lead changed hands 11 times before Alicia Schneider gave the
Huskies a five-point lead with a three-pointer and layup on
back-to-back possessions at the 1:30 mark. Schneider was
four-of-four from the field in the opening frame helping Tech shoot
65 percent as a team from the field in the half. The score was
39-36 in favor of the hosts at the intermission.
The Bulldogs grabbed their only lead of the second half at the
16:27 mark, 45-44. Tech proceeded to go on a 15-5 run capped by
Sarah Stream's three-point play at 6:05. Jenna Bartels got an
unbelievable home-court bounce on a three-pointer with 4:41 to play
to maintain the 11-point margin. She then drilled another triple
two minutes later to again make the lead 11 at 67-56. The Huskies
cashed in seven-of-eight free throws in the final two minutes for
the 12-point victory.
"We played very well defensively in the second half to hold them to
26 points," said Barnes, who got his first career win over UMD. "We
also came up with 12 offensive rebounds in the second half, and
that was huge."
Schneider earned Superior Player of the Game honors with 16 points
and 10 rebounds. Stream finished with a game-high 20 points to go
with seven rebounds. Bartels notched 19 points, four rebounds and
four assists. Junior Lena Widman also had a noteworthy performance
with nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high five steals.
Tech finished the game at 48 percent from the field and 50 percent
(seven-of-14) from three-point range. The Huskies also managed a
40-28 rebounding advantage.
Michigan Tech (7-3) will take a week off before hosting the Country
Inn & Suites Classic at the SDC Gym on Dec. 29-30. The Huskies
face Marygrove Friday (Dec. 29) and Finlandia Saturday (Dec. 30),
with tipoff for both games set for 7:30 p.m.
Notes: Schneider's 10 rebounds was a career high, surpassing her
old best of nine (vs. Northland on Dec. 5, 2005) ... Stream's 20
points was her season high and the third 20-point game by a Husky
this season (Schneider and Wysocky have both scored 21 in a
game).
