ASHLAND, Ohio -- Senior Radayl Richardson became the 20th player
in Michigan Tech men's basketball history to score 1,000 points
today, but unfortunately for the 6-3 guard it came in a 78-57 loss
at Ashland. The Huskies fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Eagles improved
to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
AU jumped out to a 23-9 lead in the first nine minutes of the game
by hitting 8-of-12 field goals including four three-pointers. The
hosts maintained the double digit margin through halftime,
46-31.
Richardson's 1,000th point came during a second-half stretch in
which he scored eight points in 65 seconds. The Richardson run cut
a 16-point deficit to a 55-47 gap with 12:17 to play. Ashland
answered with the next nine points to expand the margin to 17
points at the 9:36 mark. The Huskies were unable to get inside of
14 the remainder of the way.
Richardson finished with a team-high 14 points to go with five
rebounds. Strom notched 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Kris Alpers and Kevin Maloney, with eight points apiece, were the
next-highest Husky scorers.
Ashland shot 41 percent from the field compared to 37 percent for
the Huskies. The Eagles also had large advantages in turnovers
(AU-9, MT-16) and free throws (AU-17, MT-5).
Michigan Tech will play the first of five consecutive home games
Thursday (Dec. 7) at the SDC Gym. The Huskies host Northwood at
7:30 p.m.
Note: Richardson now owns 1,003 career points. He is the fifth Tech
player in the last five years to surpass the 1,000-point plateau
(Matt Cameron, J.T. Luginski, Josh Buettner, and Jason Marcotte are
the others).
