ASHLAND, Ohio -- A 28-5 Michigan Tech run that spanned both
halves helped the Huskies defeat Ashland, 86-79, in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest
today. Tech received a career-high 21 points from Alicia Schneider
and 18 more from Katie Wysocky to move to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in
league play.
Ashland built an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes and pushed the
margin to as many as 10 points in the opening half. That 38-28
Eagles' edge at the 3:21 mark was erased by halftime. Amy Storer
drained back-to-back shots and Katie Zimmerman knocked down a
three-pointer to finish off a 12-2 run that left the score, 40-all,
at the intermission.
Tech picked up in the second half where it left off the first.
Sarah Stream scored five straight points, and 16 of the first 19
points scored in the half went on the Huskies side of the
scoreboard for a 56-43 advantage at the 14:31 mark. The gap was a
high as 15 points in favor of the visitors before Ashland worked
its way back to within single digits in the final minute.
Michigan Tech shot its highest percentage of the year from the
field at 57 percent. Schneider (10-of-14) and Wysocky (8-of-13)
combined to shoot 67 percent. Schneider added four assists and
three rebounds, while Wysocky notched a career- and team-high eight
rebounds.
Storer was a perfect four-of-four from the field and scored a
career-high 12 points. Stream (14) and Lena Widman (12) also
reached double figures in points.
AU went 48 percent from the field and was led by Amber Rall's 26
points.
Michigan Tech will return home for six consecutive games starting
Thursday (Dec. 7) when it hosts Northwood for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at
the SDC Gym.
Notes: MTU has won 14 consecutive games against GLIAC South
Division opponents. The GLIAC South team to beat the Huskies was
Ashland in 2004 (Jan. 19) . . . Tech has had six different leading
scorers in as many games so far this season . . . Schneider
shattered her old career high of 13 points, which she tallied at
Findlay a year ago (Dec. 17).
