Strom Named to All-Tournament Team After 25-Point
Effort
DULUTH, Minn. -- Tim Strom (Marquette, Mich.) and Radayl
Richardson (Detroit, Mich./ St. Martin De Porres) scored 25 and 22
points, respectively, for the Michigan Tech men's basketball team,
but Minnesota Duluth came away with a hard-fought 80-76 win in the
final game of the American Family Insurance Classic at Romano
Gymnasium Saturday night.
Much like Friday's game against Minnesota State, the Huskies
trailed by a five-point margin at the half. The story for the
Huskies was a 13-point exhibition by Strom, who led his team on an
8-4 run that gave Tech an 18-14 lead with 11:10 remaining in the
session. Strom scored all eight points in the stretch, including
two buckets from behind the arc.
The home team answered, however, and the Bulldogs held a 33-28
advantage at the break.
UMD led by as many as 10 points (52-42) at the 11:15 mark of the
second frame, but MTU would not go away. A three-pointer from
Richardson and a pair of free throws from Eddie Ross (Fond du Lac,
Wis.) cut the Bulldogs' lead to 63-61 with 4:39 remaining in the
contest.
Minnesota Duluth (5-1) was pressured, but it did not break down the
stretch, as it held a 76-74 lead and a 78-76 lead that eventually
became an 80-76 triumph. The Huskies nearly had a chance to tie the
game up in the waning seconds, but a reverse layup attempt by Josh
Makela (Ishpeming, Mich./Westwood) missed the mark. UMD's Bryan
Foss buried two chances from the charity stripe to stake his team
to its fifth win of the year.
Strom, who amassed a career-high with 25 points off 9-for-15
shooting from the field, was also 5-for-7 from the free-throw line
and 2-for-4 from downtown. Richardson's 22-point performance was
highlighted by three conversions from three-point land and a
7-for-8 clip from the line. Robby Springborn (Fond du Lac, Wis.)
tallied 16 points, aided by a 7-for-7 tally at the foul line.
Foss led all players with 26 points and was named co-MVP of the
tournament for the Bulldogs. University of Minnesota transfer
Jordan Nuness added 19 points for the home team and was also a
member American Family Insurance Classic All-Tournament Team.
Tech shot 47 percent from the field (22-47), while UMD compiled a
49 percent shooting percentage (24-49). A total of 65 free throws
were attempted in the game, as 48 personal fouls were called.
Michigan Tech (2-2) begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference play next Wednesday (Nov. 29) at Northern Michigan.
Opening tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Berry Events
Center.
