Widman Notches Career High 16 Points
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Lewis jumped out to an early lead and held on
to defeat Michigan Tech, 82-69, in women's basketball action
tonight at the SDC Gym. The visitors made 11 three-pointers
including four in the final 10 minutes to hold off the Huskies'
second half charge.
Tech found itself trailing by 10 just seven minutes into the game
and by 14 points at the 8:10 mark. Lena Widman then came off the
bench and tallied 10 points over the next five minutes to get the
gap back in single digits. A pair of three-pointers from Kelly
Dianis helped LU head into halftime with a 41-27 lead.
Back-to-back triples from Catherine Rottier midway through the
second half capped a 15-5 Huskies' run with the margin down to five
(54-49). Layups from Widman and Jenna Bartels kept it a six-point
game with 6:00 to play before Lewis knocked down more key shots to
make it a double digit lead once again. The Huskies go no closer
than 10 in the final 3:30.
"Hats off to Lewis. They made the big shots," said head coach John
Barnes. "We got into an early hole and when you do that against a
quality team, it's hard to come back."
Rottier and Sarah Stream, Tech's leading scorers from last night's
win over Wisconsin-Parkside, shot a combined six-of-23 from the
field, and the Huskies finished at 39 percent as a team. Rottier
notched 13 points and six assists. Widman was the team's leading
scorer with a career-high 16 points.
"Lena took the ball strong to the basket and had a good night,"
said Barnes. "Our outside shots weren't falling, and we had to try
to generate some offense around the rim."
Lewis' shot 47 percent from the field and had three players score
19 points or more.
Michigan Tech (1-1) will travel to Winter Park, Florida, next week
for two games in the Rollins Classic. The Huskies face Tampa Friday
(Nov. 24) at 4 p.m. before taking on host Rollins Saturday (Nov.
25) at 2 p.m.
