Huskies Tennis Team Improves Record to 5-5
ASHLAND, Ohio -- All six Michigan Tech women's tennis players
won at least one match in a 7-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference victory over Ashland today. The Huskies
concluded their three-match road trip with a 1-2 record and are now
5-5 overall, 3-4 in the league.
Tech opened the match in strong fashion by sweeping the doubles
matches for a 3-0 team lead. Samantha Jang-Stewart and Katie
Lindahl gained a hard-fought, 8-6, victory at the number two
flight. The Huskies won at number one and number three doubles both
by 8-3 scores.
In singles, Michigan Tech swept each of the top four flights. Amy
Palmgren made quick work of Kate Goudy at number one, 6-2, 6-1.
Jang-Stewart clinched the team's win with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at
number three singles.
At number two singles, Silvia Oliveros was able to play through
nagging injuries to come away with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Heather Neff and
Lindahl lost their number five and six matches in straight sets
before Whitney Schoep put a cap on the team victory with a win in
the closest match of the day. The freshman claimed a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0
(10-4) triumph over AU's Morgan Sanders.
"It was good to finish the weekend with a win," said head coach
Mike Axford. "We played with confidence and it was good to see us
adjust to playing outdoors after the first two matches of the
weekend were indoors."
Michigan Tech will be off until a trip to Saginaw Valley State on
Saturday, Oct. 21.
