MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's tennis team closed
out its 2006 fall regular season with a 9-0 loss at Northwood, a
team that has won three straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference titles.
"Despite the scores, I felt we were right there in this match,"
said head coach Mike Axford. "There were a lot of deuce games that
we couldn't close out. This team doesn't give you free points, and
that's what makes them good."
Amy Palmgren and Silvia Oliveros both turned in solid matches at
number one and two singles, respectively. Palmgren fell to Sue
Rossano, 6-3, 6-3. Oliveros nearly forced a third set before
losing, 6-1, 7-5, to Desiree Roset. None of the other Huskies won
more than two games in their matches.
At number two doubles, Monika Malinska and Samantha Jang-Stewart
lost to Rossano and Roset, 8-5. The scores of the number one and
number three doubles matches were both 8-1 in favor of the
hosts.
"We'll us this match and yesterday's big win (8-0 over Saginaw
Valley State) to prepare for next weekend's conference tournament,"
said Axford.
Michigan Tech (6-6, 4-5 GLIAC) finished in a tie for sixth in the
final GLIAC standings. The Huskies will be the number six seed in
this weekend's GLIAC Tournament at Midland, Mich. They will face
third-seeded Ferris State in Friday's (Oct. 27) opening match.
Note: Monika Malinska did not play singles because of injury,
forcing Tech's normal number four, five, and six singles players to
all play up a flight.
