Huskies Outscore Lakers by 13 Points in Second Half
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech outscored Grand Valley State by
13 points in the second half to claim a 61-52 victory in Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action
at the SDC Gym tonight. The Huskies converted all 11 of their free
throws in the final half including eight in the last three minutes
to preserve the win.
Radayl Richardson hit two early three-pointers to get Tech off to a
good start. Kyle Pullen's tip-in midway through the opening stanza
gave MTU a 15-11 advantage. The Lakers turned things around with a
14-4 run and had a six point lead with a minute to go before
settling for a 28-24 edge at the intermission.
Three triples from Tim Strom jump-started the Huskies to a 15-5 run
to open the second half. The hosts would never trail again. Bob
Evans drained converted three straight free throws after being
fouled on a three-point attempt to give MTU a 48-39 margin with
9:49 to play. Four minutes later, Evans swished his second triple
of the night, making the lead 12 points -- the largest of the
game.
Richardson made six straight foul shots down the stretch before
Evans closed out scoring with two more free throws at :21.
MTU was 92 percent (12-of-13) at the foul line and 41 percent from
the field on the evening. The Huskies held GVSU to 35 percent field
goal shooting and forced 21 Laker turnovers.
Richardson finished with a team-high 16 points to go with five
rebounds and three blocks. Strom and Evans added 13 and 11 points,
respectively. Pullen notched eight points and six rebounds -- both
season highs -- in a solid 24 minutes off the bench.
Michigan Tech improved to 4-8 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC with the
victory. The Huskies finish out a three-game week with a trip to
Lake Superior State on Saturday (Jan. 7). Tipoff is slated for 3
p.m.
