HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech held Saginaw Valley State to 19
first-half points in a 60-51 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference win in men's basketball tonight at the SDC Gym. The
Huskies held the Cardinals to 35 percent shooting and owned a 38-30
rebounding advantage en route to an eighth consecutive victory.
The Huskies had an 11-3 lead before SVSU finally scored its second
field goal at the 11:34 mark. Craig Genung and Bob Evans provided a
spark off the bench, scoring 11 of the team's next 18 points on the
way to a 10-point halftime lead. Genung's turnaround, 15-foot
jumper at the buzzer made the halftime score, 29-19.
Genung opened the second half with a jumper for a 12-point margin.
The gap grew to as many as 20 after Stephen Folson blocked a shot
and Genung connected on another jumper with 4:09 to play. Saginaw
Valley made things interested by draining five straight
three-pointers -- the last of which came with 24 seconds left.
Radayl Richardson re-entered the game and made two free throws to
ice it for the Huskies.
Genung finished with career highs of 15 points and six rebounds.
Tim Strom added his second career double-double in as many days
with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Robby Springborn also reached
double figures with 10 points to go with four assists.
MTU shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field and 79 percent
(15-of-19) from the foul line in the win.
Michigan Tech will try to add to its winning streak Saturday (Jan.
28) with a 3 p.m. tipoff vs. Northwood.
