HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Robby Springborn's jumper in the paint with
41 seconds left provided the winning margin for Michigan Tech in a
59-56 nail-biting win over Wayne State in GLIAC men's hoops tonight
at the SDC Gym. The game was not decided until the final horn,
however, as the Huskies defense had to come up with two defensive
stops to win its sixth consecutive game.
Bob Evans drained his fourth three-pointer of the game with 1:50 to
play for a 55-49 Tech advantage. WSU answered right back with a
Kris Krzyminski triple and a layup to get within one at the 1:04
mark. After a timeout, Springborn hit his 10-footer for a 57-54
score. Krzyminski made two free throws to cut it back to 57-56 with
:17 showing on the clock. Wayne State then fouled Radayl
Richardson, who missed the front end of a one-and-one. Krzyminski
missed the potential Warrior game-winner on the ensuing possession
with four seconds left, though, and Josh Makela came up with the
rebound. He was fouled and made both of his free throws for the
final margin. WSU had a desperation three-point attempt that was
off the mark.
MTU was out-rebounded 33-25, but capitalized on nine three-pointers
and five fewer turnovers than WSU in the game. The Huskies shot 42
percent from the field and 41 percent from long range. Wayne State
hit 44 percent from the floor, but only 18 percent from behind the
arc.
Tech held a 29-17 halftime cushion after holding the visitors to
just six field goals. The Huskies closed the opening stanza on a
12-3 run.
Wayne State countered with a 12-0 run early in the second half to
grab a 35-34 edge at the 14:31 mark. The lead changed hands five
more times before a Stephen Folson three-pointer put MTU on top for
good with 4:35 left.
Evans finished with a team-high 16 points to go with two assists
and two steals. Springborn added 11 points and five boards. Makela
notched nine points and was named Superior Player of the Game with
his timely rebound and free throw makes to seal the MTU win.
Michigan Tech (9-8, 5-3 GLIAC) will face Hillsdale on Saturday
(Jan. 21) at the SDC Gym. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
Notes: MTU received 30 points from its bench, compared to zero for
Wayne State . . . The game was the fourth straight between the
schools decided by five points or less . . . Tech has held five of
its last six opponents under 60 points.
