All 15 Huskies See Game Action
DULUTH, Minn. -- The host Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs shot 54
percent from the field and made 27 free throws in a 73-60 men's
basketball contest at Romano Gymnasium tonight.
The score was tied at 16-all with 7:31 remaining in the opening
half before UMD went on a 14-0 run. The Huskies could never cut the
deficit back to single digits after that. The Bulldogs made their
run with 62 percent field goal shooting in the first half.
The hosts expanded their lead to as many as 22 points in the second
half before MTU put on a full-court press. The Huskies seemed to
grab some momentum midway through the half as Stephen Folson made a
steal and a layup to cut the margin to 57-43.
UMD answered by pushing the gap back up to 19 points with 4:05 to
play. Just over a minute later, Joe DeMartin capped a 8-1 run by
Tech with two free throws to make the score, 70-58. John Emerson
answered with two of the Bulldogs 27 makes at the foul line and
neither team scored again until there were 29 seconds left.
DeMartin tied for team-high scoring honors with Robby Springborn.
Both players had 12 points. Tim Strom added 10 points and six
rebounds. Fedrick Bowe scored his first collegiate points with a
pair of second-half buckets. He also pulled down a game-high nine
rebounds.
Tech shot 40 percent from the field, but couldn't match UMD's 54
percent overall. The Bulldogs also had a huge advantage in free
throws. They were 27-of-36 compared to 10-of-14 for the
Huskies.
Michigan Tech (3-6) will take a week off before returning to action
on the road, traveling to St. Joseph's (Ind.) for Dec. 29
non-conference matchup.
