PREVIEW: #19 Huskies travel to #16 MSU in Mason Cup Semifinal

CCHA SEMIFINAL
• No. 19 Michigan Tech travels to No. 16 Minnesota State on Saturday in the CCHA Mason Cup Semifinal.
• The puck drops at 8:07 p.m. Eastern at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
• The Huskies are the No. 4 seed, and the Mavericks are No. 1.
• No. 13 Augustana travels to No. 18 St. Thomas for the other semifinal at 5:07 p.m. Eastern.
• It's the fourth time in the last five seasons that Tech is in the semifinal.
• The CCHA Mason Cup Championship is scheduled for Friday, March 20 at the highest remaining seed.
 
HOW THEY ADVANCED
• No. 4 seed Michigan Tech advanced with a sweep of No. 5 Bowling Green in the CCHA Quarterfinal, and the No. 1 Mavericks defeated No. 8 Ferris State in a Game 3 on Sunday.
• No. 2 St. Thomas swept No. 7 Lake Superior State, and No. 3 Augustana swept No. 6 Bemidji State.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• The CCHA Mason Cup Championship Game is on Friday, March 20.
• NCAA Regionals are March 26-29.

CCHA QUARTERFINAL
• No. 20 Michigan Tech swept Bowling Green in the CCHA Quarterfinals.
• The Huskies won 5-3 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.
• Eight different Huskies scored the goals, and Owen Bartoszkiewicz had a .937 save percentage in the series.

• Michigan Tech swept No. 17 Minnesota State for its fifth straight victory on Jan. 16-17.

• The Huskies swept the Mavericks with two regulation wins for the first time since 2007.
• Carson Latimer had a goal each night while Max Koskipirtti, Carson Birnie, Luca Fasciano, Kalem Parker, and Isaac Gordon also scored. Owen Bartoszkiewicz earned both wins between the pipes and made 46 saves on Saturday.
 
CCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK
• Tyler Miller is the CCHA Defenseman of the Week for the first time in his career.
• He led conference blueliners with three points last week, dishing out three assists in Tech's playoff series victory over Bowling Green.
• Miller has skated in all 38 games this season for the Huskies and has three goals and 10 assists.

• Stiven Sardarian is a Hobey Baker candidate for the second year in a row.
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz is also a candidate for college hockey's top player award.

• Michigan Tech leads the nation in games played (38) this season.
• Tech is sixth in the nation with 23 wins.
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz leads the nation in minutes played and is second in wins (23). He ranks fourth with 973 saves.
• Stiven Sardarian is fourth in the nation in assists (32) and ninth in points (44).
• Max Koskipirtti ranks 16th in the nation with four game-winning goals and is 11th in faceoff wins (373).
• Jack Anderson ranks fourth in the nation in goals by a defenseman and 16th in blocked shots (65).

COLLEGE HOCKEY INC. NOTES
• Bill Muckalt is one of 11 new coaches across the country for the 2025-26 season.
• Michigan Tech is tied for the largest freshman class in the nation (12).
• 24 percent of Finlanders in college hockey are on Michigan Tech's roster (5-of-25).
• Seven of the 76 players in college hockey who played in the WHL are on Michigan Tech's roster.
• Coach Muckalt is one of six NCAA head coaches with NHL playing experience.
 
COACH MUCKALT
• Bill Muckalt was named the 23rd head coach at Michigan Tech on May 22, 2025.
• Muckalt returned to Houghton after one season as head coach of Lindenwood.
• Muckalt was an assistant coach at Tech for four seasons from 2011-15.
• Muckalt played 256 NHL games over five seasons with Vancouver, New York Islanders, Ottawa, and Minnesota. He scored 97 career points with 40 goals and 57 assists.
• He won two National Championships as a player at Michigan in 1996 and 1998 and was an All-American in 1998.
 
SPORTSCENTER TOP 10
• Carson Latimer's second-period goal at Northern Michigan on Nov. 8 checked in at number five on ESPN's top 10 plays of the night.
• It was also highlighted as No. 1 in the CCHA top plays of the week.
 
NON-CONFERENCE
• The Huskies went 5-5 in non-conference play.
• Tech split at No. 8 Minnesota on Oct. 3-4.
• The Huskies also split at Alaska on Oct. 17-18.
• Tech fell 6-4 at Clarkson on Oct. 31. The trip to New York wrapped up with a 3-0 shutout at St. Lawrence on Nov. 1.
• Tech opened the GLI with a 5-2 win over Miami and then fell 4-1 to No. 3 Michigan State in the title game.

CCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE MONTH
• Jack Anderson was the CCHA Defenseman of February for the second straight time.
•  Anderson paced conference blueliners with eight points across six games in February, scoring five goals with three assists and finishing the month at plus-3. Netting two power-play goals and one game-winner, he had 22 shots on goal, while blocking 11 defensively and averaging a nation-leading 26:57 minutes per contest.
 
CCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE MONTH
•  Jack Anderson was the National and CCHA Defenseman of the Month for January.
•  Anderson scored four goals and added six assists in 10 games in January. He also blocked 20 shots and had a plus-12 rating.
•  Anderson had a pair of three-point games during the month. He became the first Tech defenseman since January 1985 to score a hat trick, burying three goals against Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 3) at the Desert Hockey Classic. He scored on the power play and added two assists in a win at No. 15 St. Thomas (Jan. 31).
 
CCHA FORWARD OF THE MONTH
• Stiven Sardarian has been named the CCHA Forward of the Month after he scored six goals and added seven assists in nine games in November, accumulating at least one point in eight of the nine contests.
• His 13 points ranked third in the NCAA. Sardarian had two goals and one assist against Northern Michigan (Nov. 7) and St. Thomas (Nov. 28).
 
CCHA ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
• Teydon Trembecky was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month for October after he scored five goals and added five assists in his first month of college hockey. He had three power-play goals, 23 shots on goal, and seven blocked shots.
 
CAPTAINS
• Junior Isaac Gordon is the captain of the 2025-26 Huskies.
• Junior Max Koskipirtti and seniors Jack Anderson and Joe Prouty are also on the leadership team as alternate captains.
 
PRESEASON ALL-CCHA
• Senior forward Stiven Sardarian was named to both the coaches' and media's Preseason All-CCHA Team.
• Junior forward Isaac Gordon was named to the coaches' Preseason All-CCHA Team.
 
ASSISTANT COACHES
• Benton Maass begins his first season as an Assistant Coach. Maass comes to Houghton after one season as an Assistant Coach at Lindenwood. As a defenseman, he played collegiately at New Hampshire and Minnesota State and appeared in 122 professional games in the AHL and ECHL.
• L.J. Scarpace begins his first season as an Assistant Coach. Scarpace comes to Houghton after serving as a video coach in the NHL since 2017. He most recently worked with Detroit for the past six seasons. As a goaltender, he played collegiately at Western Michigan and Michigan.
• Former Michigan Tech hockey player Tyler Shelast begins his fifth season as an assistant coach. Before being named an assistant coach, Shelast spent the previous eight seasons as the strength and conditioning coach for the Huskies.

NHL DRAFT PICKS
• Carson Latimer was selected by Ottawa in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft with the 123rd pick. He is now a free agent.
• Kalem Parker was selected by Minnesota in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft with the 181st pick. He is now a free agent.
• Stiven Sardarian was selected by Buffalo in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft with the 88th pick. He is now a free agent.
 
TRANSFERS
• Jack Anderson played three seasons and 90 games at Lindenwood (2022-25). He tallied 25 points with the Lions on four goals and 21 assists.
• Owen Baker played seven games in one season at Michigan State (2023-24). He notched two points with a goal and an assist.
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz played at Lindenwood in 2024-25, with a .919 save percentage and 2.57 goals-against average in 29 games. He played six games for Minnesota during the 2022-23 season with a 3.72 goals-against average and .883 save percentage.
• Joe Prouty played three seasons and 90 games at Lindenwood (2022-25). He tallied 21 points with the Lions with three goals and 18 assists.
• Stiven Sardarian played the two seasons for New Hampshire (2022-24). In 61 NCAA games for the Wildcats, he tallied nine goals and 12 assists.
