#19 Huskies host #6 GVSU at Kearly Stadium

GLIAC OPENER
• No. 19 Michigan Tech hosts No. 6 Grand Valley State in the GLIAC home opener.
• Kickoff is set for Noon at Kearly Stadium.
• 2026 marks the 104th season of Michigan Tech football.
• Tech is 4-1, and GVSU is 5-0.
• There is an all-alumni Football Reunion at Michigan Tech this weekend.

HUSKIES RANKED
• Michigan Tech is ranked No. 19 in this week's AFCA Coaches' Poll.
• The Huskies are also No. 24 in the D2Football.com poll.
• No. 19 is the highest ranking for Tech since Oct. 20, 2015, when the Huskies checked in at No. 17.

LAST TIME OUT
• No. 20 Tech dominated previously unbeaten Roosevelt 57-28 in the GLIAC opener down in Chicago.
• The Huskies racked up 529 yards of offense and held the Lakers to 283.
• Elliott Larner scored three rushing touchdowns. Abram Larner, Jake Rueff, Samuel Delgado, and Cameron Cornett also scored for the offense.
• Jackson Zachary scored a pick-six, returning an interception 68 yards to the end zone.
• Mahdi Sabbagh led Tech with eight total tackles, including six solos. Chase Koch added six tackles. Dakota Blackwell, Jackson Zachary, and Jacob Najor each had an interception.
 
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
• Grand Valley State is 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC. The wins this season are over Charleston, West Texas A&M, Ashland, Judson, and Wayne State.
• The Lakers lead the nation in scoring offense and completion percentage (.758) and rank second in third-down percentage by the defense and points allowed.
• Andrew Schuster is completing 74 percent of his passes for an average of 247.4 yards per game. He has 18 touchdowns and one interception. Kellen Russell-Dixon averages 70.2 yards per game on the ground with four touchdowns. Kellen Reed has 14 touchdown receptions and averages 147 yards per game receiving.
• Torian Wyatt leads the defense with 21 total tackles while Benji Allen and Keegan Sell have 20 tackles.
• GVSU was picked second in the GLIAC Preseason Poll after going 7-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play in 2025. The Lakers received one first place vote.
• Scott Wooster is set for his third year as the head coach. He spent the three years prior to being named head coach as the offensive line coach/run game coordinator.
 
LAST MEETING
• Tech fell 18-15 at GVSU on Nov. 8, 2025, in Allendale.
• The Huskies held the Lakers to 2-for-12 on third down and outscored them 8-3 in the fourth, but GVSU was able to get three first downs on the last drive to run out the clock.• Jake Rueff and Alex Bueno scored the touchdowns for the Huskies.
• Porter Zeeman had 12 tackles for Tech.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• The annual Miner's Cup is next weekend at Kearly Stadium against Northern Michigan.
• The Huskies then hit the road for back-to-back weeks at Ferris State (Oct. 24) and Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 31).
• The regular season wraps up with home games against Davenport (Nov. 7) and Wayne State (Nov. 14).
 
COACH METTLACH
• Dan Mettlach is in his fourth season as head coach of the football Huskies in 2026.
• Mettlach was named the 2025 GLIAC Coach of the Year.
• He holds a 23-14 overall record.
• Mettlach was named the 17th leader of the Huskies on November 29, 2022.
• As quarterback for the Huskies from 2001-04, he was named an All-American, the 2004 GLIAC Player of the Year, and a two-time All-GLIAC selection.

HALL OF FAMERS
• Former football players Andy Bonk, Mike Horan, and Scott Keiser will be inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame in October.
• Andy Bonk was a defensive back for the football team from 2001-04. He was a three-time All-GLIAC First Team selection and ranks 11th all-time with 268 tackles.
• Mike Horan was a four-year letterwinner on the football team from 1971-74, playing running back and defensive back. He earned All-NIC Honorable Mention honors in 1974 when the team went undefeated at 9-0 and won an NIC Championship.
• Scott Kieser was a two-sport athlete at Michigan Tech, playing quarterback for the Huskies from 1991-95 and as a guard on the men's basketball team from 1993-96. In his career, he threw for 23 touchdowns and 2,800 yards. As a senior, he had 13 touchdowns and 1,605 yards passing.
 
ELITE 100 WATCH LIST
• Senior left tackle Brandon DeVries was named to the offensive squad as part of the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List.
• DeVries, a two-time captain for the Huskies, has played in 32 games for his career in Black & Gold and was a First Team All-GLIAC selection last season and a Second Team All-GLIAC honoree in 2024 and 2023.
 
RETURNERS WITH 2025 HONORS
• Linebacker Chase Koch was named to the 2025 D2CCA All-Super Region 3 Second Team. Koch paced the Huskies with 105 total tackles, two interceptions, four breakups, and two quarterback hurries.
• All-GLIAC First Team: offensive lineman Brandon DeVries, wide receiver Nic Nora, defensive tackle Pierce Miller, and linebacker Chase Koch.
• All-GLIAC Honorable Mention: offensive lineman Matthew Daanen, offensive lineman Rowland Ball, kicker Avery Kucharski, and running back Jake Rueff.
