HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team wraps a four-game home stand this weekend hosting No. 14 nationally-ranked Northern Michigan on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) and No. 22 nationally-ranked Ferris State on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).

Thursday's contest will be televised locally on FOX-UP with Dave Ellis calling the action. TV6 and FOX-UP began broadcasting the Tech versus NMU rivalry during the 2013-14 season.

About the Wildcats
Northern Michigan travels across US-41 with an overall record of 12-2 while playing to a 3-1 ledger in league play. The No. 14-ranked Wildcats most recently saw a six-game win streak snapped on Saturday, falling to No. 1 Grand Valley State (78-66). NMU's other loss came on Nov. 21, falling to Minnesota Duluth (85-70), a team the Huskies beat the day before.
The Wildcats are winning games by as much as 11.6 points, averaging 73.4 points per outing. Standout Jacy Weisbrod paces the GLIAC with 243 total points, for an average of 17.4 per game. She also leads the league in field goal attempts (204), field goals (90), 3-point attempts (128), 3-pointers (50) and 3-pointers per game (3.57). Her 3-point numbers also rank first in the country.
As a team, the Wildcats have the second-best turnovers per game in the country (11.8) and the 12th-best 3-point percentage nationally (36%).
Sarah Newcomer has knocked down 26 3-pointers this season, averaging 1.86 makes per game as part of her 9.6 points per outing, adding 2.1 assists. CJ Romero ranks third in the GLIAC with 4.1 assists per game as Alyssa Hill pulls down a team-high 7.3 rebounds.
Northern Michigan was tabbed to finish runner-up in the GLIAC under head coach Casey Thousand in her fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats.
About the Bulldogs
Ferris State holds a 10-3 overall ledger while going 3-1 through the first two weekends of GLIAC play. The No. 22 nationally-ranked Bulldogs have won three in a row following back-to-back losses to Wayne State (84-71) and West Texas A&M (68-54). FSU most recently earned a 96-90 victory against Parkside on Monday.
The Bulldogs rank top-10 nationally in assists per game (18.4), free throw percentage (81.0), 3-point attempts per game (28.7) and 3-pointers per game (8.8). Mia Riley ranks second in the league in points (202) and fourth in points per game (15.5) to lead the team. Kadyn Blanchard (14ppg) and Mya Hiram (11.1ppg) also reach double-digit scoring as part of the 78.4 points per game.
Blanchard also adds a team-high 1.92 steals and 3.9 assists per game as Hiram produces a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per outing.
The Bulldogs were predicted to finish third in the league under Kurt Westendorp in his 10th season as head coach at Ferris State.
About the Huskies
After going a perfect 4-0 in December, Michigan Tech returned to action last week with a split in its return to GLIAC play, falling to No. 1 Grand Valley State (73-53) on Friday before besting Davenport (71-65) Saturday. For the season, the Huskies are 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The play of
Janie Tormanen and
Alyssa Wypych in the win over Davenport highlighted the weekend as Wypych netted a new career-high 24 points on an efficient 7-12 from the field, including 2-4 from trey and 8-9 from the free throw line, while Tormanen secured her second double-double of the season with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, five on the offensive end. The Menagha, Minnesota, native also had an efficient shooting day, going 8-11 from the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore standout
Ella Mason recorded her fourth 20-point outing against Grand Valley State and paces the team with 15.4 points per game, with the aforementioned duo of Wypych (11.1ppg) and Tormanen (10.6ppg) joining her.
Kendall Standfest leads the team with 5.6 rebounds to go with 8.3 points, as
Soraya Timms is the top facilitator with 4.3 dimes and 9.8 points per game.
The team ranks second in the GLIAC and 14th in the country in 3-point percentage (35.6%) and leads the nation with an 81.7% free-throw percentage.
One Last Thing
For the season, the Huskies are winning the rebounding battle with 34.5 rpg with a margin of 2.5 and are 7-0 when outrebounding opponents.Â
