Huskies begin second half of GLIAC play on the road

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Halfway through the conference schedule, the Michigan Tech women's basketball team takes to the road for a contest at Davenport on Thursday before facing the No. 1 team in the nation, Grand Valley State, on Saturday.

The Games

The matchup at Davenport is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff as the Huskies are looking for a series sweep, besting the Panthers at the SDC Gymnasium 71-65 on Jan. 3. The Black & Gold's tilt with the No. 1 Lakers will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The Huskies fell 73-53 in their first meeting with the No. 1 Lakers on Jan. 2.

About the Panthers

Davenport has lost four of its last six contests for an overall record of 5-13 and a 3-7 GLIAC ledger. The Panthers most recently played to a weekend split, besting Roosevelt 73-57 Thursday before falling 76-58 at Parkside. DU currently sits in a tie for fifth with Roosevelt.

Maddie Geers (11.8), Ellie Toney (10.5) and Nevaeh Williams (10.8) average double-digit scoring for Davenport. The duo of Geers and Toney also averages over five rebounds per game to lead the team.

Williams paces the team in steals (2.5) and assists (3.8) while adding 3.1 rebounds per game.

Despite the record, the Panthers boast a GLIAC-best three-point percentage defense (26.9%), while allowing 65.1 points per game, ranking fourth-best in the league.

Geers (1.06) and Reese Polega (1.00) are averaging over a block per game to rank fourth and fifth in the GLIAC, respectively.

About the Lakers

Grand Valley State continues to be unbeaten this season, with an overall record of 18-0 and a league-best 10-0.

The Lakers rank top-15 in assists per game (17.3), rebound margin (11.7), offensive rebounds (17.2), scoring defense (52.1), scoring margin (28.9), scoring offense (81.0), steals per game (13.7) and turnovers forced per game (25.28).

Paige Vanstee and MacKenzie Bisballe rank first and second on the team in points and rebounds per game. Vanstee records 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as Bisballe adds 14.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing.

The duo ranks first and second in the league in field goal percentage, with Bisballe shooting 53.6 percent, with Vanstee close behind, shooting 48.8 percent from the field.

Vanstee leads the team in steals per game (2.4) as Bisballe paces the team with 1.1 blocks per game.

Nicole Kamin ranks eighth in the country and first in the league with a 2.59 assist-to-turnover ratio.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech has played to a 6-4 record over its last 10 games for an overall record of 12-6 and a 6-4 GLIAC standing residing third in the race. The Huskies most recently had a weekend split, falling short to Wayne State on Thursday (86-83) before a decisive 73-46 win over Purdue Northwest on Saturday.

Mason leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game and has six games of 20 or more points. She has hit 45 3-pointers this season, averaging 2.5 per game, both of which rank second in the GLIAC.

Alyssa Wypych (11.2) and Soraya Timms (10.8) also reach double-figure scoring as Wypych adds 4.5 rebounds and Timms produces a team-leading 4.7 assists per game.

Kendall Standfest has recorded three double-doubles this season, with a season-high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds against Wayne State.

Kloe Zentkowski recorded a career-high eight assists to go with five rebounds and four points in her first start of the season against Purdue Northwest.
