Huskies take to the road for first time in 2026

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team looks to turn a corner after dropping two games to ranked opponents this weekend, heading to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) before returning to the Upper Peninsula on Saturday to face Lake Superior State (12:00 p.m.).

About the Cardinals

Saginaw Valley State has lost four of its last five contests with an overall standing of 4-10 with a GLIAC ledger of 2-4. The Cardinals most recently suffered losses at Roosevelt (64-52) and Parkside (79-66) over the weekend.

Three of SVSU's wins have come at home, where they are 3-4 overall compared to a 1-6 record away from the James E. O'Neill Arena.

A trio of Cardinals average over 10 points per game, with All-GLIAC first teamer Megan McCalla leading the way with 15.2 ppg. Lydia Meredith, an All-GLIAC defensive team member a season ago, ranks first in the GLIAC in steals (53) and steals per game (4.08) while adding a team-high 3.8 assists and 12.8 ppg.

Lauren Borsenik is the anchor inside, pacing the GLIAC in blocks (21) and blocks per game (1.50), adding 7.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing.

Jenny Pruett is in her seventh season leading the Cardinals, who were tabbed to finish seventh in the league's preseason poll.

About the Lakers

Lake Superior State has played to a 4-10 overall standing with a 1-5 GLIAC record, most recently snapping a three game losing skid with a 57-52 victory at Roosevelt on Saturday.

Two-time All-GLIAC second teamer Grace Bradford is the heartbeat of the Lakers as she ranks first in the GLIAC in double-doubles (7), rebounds per game (11.0), rebounds (154), defensive rebounds per game (8.7) and offensive rebounds per game (2.7) while leading the team in scoring with 15.1 ppg.

Dara Capaldi joins Bradford in double-figure scoring, averaging 11 points per game with a season-high 23-point outing against Tiffin on Nov. 20.

As a team, LSSU ranks second in the GLIAC in defensive rebounds (27.4), third in rebound margin (3.6) and third in free throw attempts per game (18.93).

Lake Superior State was selected to finish 10th in the preseason coaches' poll under the guidance of Grace Howrigon in her second season at the helm of the Lakers.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech is the lone team in the GLIAC with a 3-3 record in the league, residing fifth in the standings while playing to a 9-5 record for the season. The Huskies most recently suffered losses to then-No. 14 Northern Michigan on Thursday, before failing to complete a comeback against then-No. 22 Ferris State Saturday (73-64).

The Huskies are top-three in the league in field goal percentage (42.4), free-throw percentage (80.9), three-point percentage (33.7) and turnovers per game (14.2).

Janie Tormanen leads the team and the GLIAC in field goal percentage (54.2) following a weekend where she scored 29 points on 65 percent from the field and secured her third double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 boards against Ferris State.

For the season, Ella Mason continues to lead the team in scoring with 14.6 ppg, joined by Tormanen (11.1 ppg) and Alyssa Wypych (10.9 ppg). Tormanen and Kendall Standfest each grab over five rebounds a game to lead the team, as Soraya Timms commands the offense with 4.1 assists and 9.6 points per game.

One Last Thing

The Huskies are 8-0 when allowing less than 69 points and are 3-0 in games decided by five or fewer points.
