Huskies fall in Chicago on Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team fell to Roosevelt 73-63 at the Goodman Center in Chicago on Saturday.

Sophomore Alyssa Wypych recorded a season-high 18 points on eight-of-14 shooting to go with six rebounds and two assists as freshman standout Kendall Standfest recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points, a teaming lead 13 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Veteran Isabella Lenz added 15 points in 33 minutes of action.

"I saw a lot of fight late—obviously we just didn't shoot it well and Roosevelt can really score," said head coach Sam Clayton. "We had those lulls in the second and third quarter again but I thought we finished strong in the fourth with big games from Alyssa, Kendall and Bella. Tough loss but I thought we competed hard."

Roosevelt (11-12, 9-8 GLIAC) also saw three players in double-figure scoring led by Luka Malinka with 27 points, amassing a perfect 20-of-20 from the free throw line. Jayla Turchin scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half, as Kencia added 14 points off the bench on six-of-nine shooting.

Michigan Tech (11-15, 8-10 GLIAC) held a 17-14 lead through the first quarter and trailed by a point heading into halftime with Wypych leading the trio of double-figure scorers for the Huskies with 12 points as Standfest added eight points and Lenz chipped in seven. Malinka used a 13-point first half, going eight-of-eight in the opening half to lead all scorers heading into halftime.

The Huskies got behind in the third quarter being outscored 18-11 as Turchin began to get hot scoring 11 points in the first quarter back from the break as Levasseur added five points.

Standfest recorded five points for the Black & Gold with a basket by Maja Kozlowska at the 8:13 mark showing the first points not from Wypych, Standfest, or Lenz in the game.

The offenses flowed for both teams in the fourth quarter as the two teams combined for 52 total points, seeing Michigan Tech shoot 56.3 percent with the points spread more evenly amongst the Huskies. However, Wypych still led the way with a six-point quarter, seeing Roosevelt earn a series sweep over the Black & Gold by a score of 73-63.
